Butterfly Dream

The card that I’m sharing with you today is a response to several different challenges. The layout comes from Retro Sketches‘ challenge, with further inspiration being taken from ABC Challenges. I’m also entering it to Pixie’s Snippets Playground.

The sketch given by Retro Sketches is as follows:

ABC Challenge’s challenge for the week is “B is for B… You Pick!” Which basically means free choice of things that begin with B. I had a quick brainstorm before beginning and came up with a few words. Initially I was going to do blue, birthday, banner and butterfly. As I was creating the card though that changed and what I’ve ended up with is butterfly and bubbles.

Pixie’s snippets challenge just means the card needs to include some snippets (leftovers) in its creation. The silver band was a leftover piece from another project, which conveniently was almost the perfect size. The card I used to punch the butterflies from was also leftover from another project.

A side note before I continue… The craft shop that I’ve got a lot of my supplies from has an awesome thing they do where you can order a “surprise packet” of 20 6×6 papers for 3€. These papers are a random mix from leftover decorative papers that the shop has. I received my first order of these the day I made this card and I think it is a really fantastic concept. The product description says the papers will usually be single sided, but most of mine were double-sided. It’s about half the price of buying a specific package of papers. What you get is, of course, a surprise, which could be considered a negative but I think it’s great. Partly because I have a hard time choosing papers without a specific idea of what to do with them. Whereas if I already have them on hand it’s easier to work them into a project.

Anyway, back to the subject on hand.

I started by figuring out what size papers I needed for my panels. For my main panel I decided to use one of the papers from my surprise package, which has a pattern of large circles in a soft green, and looks very bubble like to me. I cut this to size, then cut a piece of off white card to be the top panel.

After cutting them and positioning them I noticed the sizes were very slightly off, which meant there was a tiny gap between the two panels. Luckily the band that I put over covered that. I stuck the band on (and the panels to the card base) with my newly acquired roller adhesive. It’s very fun to use!

Next I stamped on my sentiment (actually I did that before sticking things down…) I used black ink and just the word “Dream” from my Hot Air Balloon stamp set. The stamping didn’t quite go properly, but never mind…

Finally I punched butterflies from some iridescent green card and positioned them. I used a my roller adhesive to stick those too. I gently curved the wings to give a bit of dimension. Ideally I would have stuck some dimensionals behind the wings to hold them in place, but the intricacy of the punch doesn’t allow for that because they would be visible through.

I played around trying to find other things to add to the card, but eventually decided that I was happy with it as it was. I think the look really benefits from the simplicity, and that adding anything else would have spoiled that.

As with most of the cards I make, I did not have a particular occasion in mind for using this card. The more I look at it though the more it strikes me as being perhaps a bit wedding-y. What do you think?
