Globetrotter

I haven’t made very many masculine cards so far, which made this card particularly fun to make. It was inspired both by Time Out challenges’ Challenge #50 and Always Playing With Paper’s The Challenge #62. I used the layout from The Paper Players’ sketch challenge. I’m also using this card as my contribution to Pixie’s Snippets Playground.

As I said, the layout is based on the one provided by The Paper Players. It worked really well for what I had in mind with this card, which is nice!

Time Out Challenges’ Challenge # 50 is a photo inspiration challenge. I picked up on the travel theme, particularly the globe in the corner, and the black and white text in the image.

The Challenge #62 is also a photo inspiration challenge. This one was specifically labelled as a masculine inspiration. I again picked up on a travel theme, with the map in the background and the travelling trunk in the foreground. (I have a feeling my dad has a very similar trunk, if not the same one! It looks really familiar.)

I started making the card by cutting out the circles from a map patterned paper I got in my surprise paper pack recently. Not having dies or punches to do the cutting with I instead drew around the base of my glass (for the bigger circle) and a little moisturiser container (for the smaller one), and then cut them out by hand. They’re not perfectly circular but they turned out well enough.

Looking through my paper stash I wasn’t sure what to use for the bottom panel. I looked back at the inspiration pictures and that trunk really caught my eye again so I wanted to do something based on that. The closest I had is the blue paper you can see. It’s actually a denim pattern, but I felt it had the right colouring and the slightly worn look to it seemed appropriate, so I went ahead and used that.

For the vertical panel I stamped a text stamp with black ink on some leftover white card, to tie in with the black and white script in the first of the challenge pictures.

I had some patterned paper with arrows on which I decided to make use of for the sentiment. I fussy cut one which had a suitable colour, and stamped a sentiment on it. I decided to keep the sentiment simple with “for you”, partly because I was working with limited space, and partly because I didn’t have anything travel related to use.

I decided to run the black ink pad around the edge of the components to help them stand out a bit better. That worked well on the text panel and the circles, but not so much on the arrow. It was impossible to get right into the crevices, so I decided to try to use a black marker instead. Which would’ve been fine, if it hadn’t bled… Oh well.

Next I started assembling it. I adhered the blue panel, and then realised I was meant to leave a gap at the bottom… Whoops again! Then I remembered I needed a strip to put along the top of the blue. I wanted to use a brassy colour (thinking of that trunk again!) but didn’t have anything suitable, so I went for silver instead. I think it works quite well.

I attached the text panel and the smaller circle using my roller adhesive. I then used dimensionals for the arrow, and foam tape for the larger circle. The foam tape seems to be a smidgen thicker than the dimensionals which actually worked in my favour when positioning it in regards to the sentiment.

All in all I’m pretty happy with how the card turned out. I think it works well as a response to all the challenges, and works well together as a card. At one point I was lamenting my decision to use both photo inspirations for one card, but I think they tied together nicely.
