Simple Pastel Flowers

Simple Pastel FlowersI started working on this card this morning before I left for work. That was a mistake, because I was enjoying the colouring so much that I didn’t want to stop! (And, as it turned out, the colouring didn’t go quite as well when I returned to it.) I made this card primarily as a response to Less Is More‘s one layer challenge to include a favourite flower. I decided to combine it with CAS on Sunday‘s pastel colour challenge and  Addicted to Stamps and More‘s anything goes challenge.

Now I don’t actually have a favourite flower, so I slightly reinterpreted the challenge to be my favourite flower stamp. Of course then I couldn’t choose, so I went for my two favourites! I decided I would have a go at no line colouring again. I worked out my positioning and stamped the flowers using my MISTI. I used a pale pink pigment ink the heads of the flowers, and a light green for the stems and leaf.

I then got started on the colouring. I used my watercolour pencils, though as the ink isn’t waterproof I wasn’t able to activate and blend them out. I started with the taller flower first and, using a previous card I’d made as a guide for the shading, coloured it using three different shades of pink. (Actually the darkest is a kind of purple-pink). The flowers, incidentally, are from Altenew’s Wild Hibiscus.

I’d only got that first flower head finished when I had to leave for work. I started on the other flower as soon as I got home and somehow, despite using the same colours, managed to make it a lot darker. Whoops… I preferred the lighter look of the first flower, but darkened it up slightly to help them match. I then went in and coloured the green portions of the flowers.

Next I stamped my sentiment, which is one I got from Hobbycraft back when I was in England. I really like the font of it. I used MFT Black Licorice ink to stamp it.

I decided to go back in and add a bit of shadow around the flowers to help them pop of the page. I did that with the black and grey from my watercolour pencils. And then the card was finished.

Simple Pastel Flowers 2I’m reasonably happy with how this card turned out. I still think the flower on the left ended up too dark though. I wish I’d paid more attention to what I was doing and used a lighter hand. Even so, I think the colouring worked nicely.

Love,

Lady Joyful

      1. Ha, thanks 😉 Yeah, they’re expensive. To be honest, buying a full set isn’t essential but I’m one of those annoying people who likes to have all of the things. I hate to have something missing from a set… And it does work out cheaper to buy them all at once together rather than a few at a time until they are all bought. If that made any sense at all.

      2. Plus the fact you would probably have to renew your earlier purchases so it would be extra expense. I’ll buy a ticket tomorrow-keep your fingers crossed!

      3. Ha ha ha!! Can you bend your index finger at the middle joint, so it’s a right angle..? That looks kinda freaky..!!

      4. Hm… don’t think I can do that. I can make it go kinda sideways when I beckon, which is another thing husband dislikes 😛 I used to be able to bend my little finger all the way backwards to touch my wrist. Can’t get it anywhere near that far now! My elbows and knees also hyper extend, which means when I straighten them they go a bit further than straight, and it looks like they are bending the wrong way slightly… Husband doesn’t like that either! 😛

      5. Lol! Can get my thumb backwards to my wrist..try putting your hand flat, on a flat surface, then trying to lift your ring finger…did you do ballet when you were little? I knew someone else who could hyper extend..she started ballet when she was three.

      6. I can’t reach my wrist backwards in any way now! I can lift my ring finger with my hand flat how you said… is that not normal? 😛 Yes I did ballet from when I was 2 until I was about 11. I quit because I didn’t want to do pointe work. Hyper extending is actually a relatively common uncommon thing I believe, if you see what I mean. More common in women too.

      7. My sons can’t lift their ring fingers like that- my mother and I can and apparently it’s a recessive gene that enables you to do that..like tongue rolling! Lol..I quit ballet at the same age for the same reason….plus one of the bigger girls who had already done a couple of years pointe work showed us the state of her feet-bleurgh. Quite a few of the class left that week!

      8. Huh, I didn’t know that about the fingers! I’d never seen what happens to the feet, but I’d heard about it, and that was enough to put me off! (Plus it clashed with the singing classes I started… I quit those about 2 months later because performing was giving me anxiety..!)

  1. I really like this card, and I think the bolder colour of the left flower adds to the overall impact – so don’t worry about it! Your colouring is really pretty and I love the balanced, clean layout. Fab card! Thanks so much for sharing with us at Less is More 🙂
