Autumn Note

After I finished yesterday’s card I was looking through the upcoming challenges to see what else I could do. I’m probably not going to be able to get any crafting done over the weekend as I’m visiting home again to help with packing. So I was checking to see if there were any challenges I hadn’t done yet that I really didn’t want to miss. And then I spotted Pixie’s Snippets Playground in my list – can’t miss that one! I picked up another couple of challenges to include – Global Design Project‘s colour challenge, and City Crafter‘s challenge to use leaves – and got down to business.

I started by thinking about how to combine the colours and the leaves. I started thinking about trying a one layer card using a couple of leaf stamps that I have and have not used much. Then my brain slammed on the brakes. Hey dummy, it said, how are you meant to use up snippets in a one layer card?

Oh. Right.

New plan then! I had a look through my dies and spotted the Tim Holtz Tattered Leaves Bigz that I’ve never used, and decided to try something with that. I wasn’t sure what, but I figured I’d work it out as I went.

Next I went digging through my snippets folder for suitable papers. The blue and red patterned papers aren’t snippets (actually… technically they are because I bought them as leftovers from larger sheets, but I’d never cut into them myself) but all the solid colours, and the gold patterned paper, are snippets. I ran them through the Big Shot with the die and ended up with a lot of leaves and still no plan!

I started playing around with layering the leaves together in different ways, with different shape and colour combinations. I quickly realised how much I liked the look of layering the patterned version of a leaf slightly offset against its solid coloured counterpart. It gives almost a shadow effect. I glued each patterned paper to its appropriate solid piece, offsetting them each slightly differently. I then experimented with different positioning until I was happy with it.

I knew I needed a sentiment to finish off the card, so I went ahead and added that before sticking the leaves down. The sentiment I used is from Avery Elle’s Petal Panel, which is one of my favourite stamp sets.

Finally I glued the leaves down. I used Tombow Multi Mono Liquid Glue which is what I’d used to layer them together.

Considering this card took me less time to take than this post took to write(!), as well as the fact that I went into it without having any idea what I was going to make, I am really happy with how this turned out. I love the look of it. It has a beautiful simplicity to it. I had plenty of leaves left over and will definitely be experimenting with doing something similar again.
