Christmas Pup

Christmas PupDespite it only being February, this is the fourth Christmas card I’ve made this year. (And indeed I made three others after Christmas and before the new year!) This one is definitely one of the cuter ones, and I had a lot of fun creating it.

I started by creating my little scene. I first cut down a piece of smooth white card, then worked out the layout for my stamps. The little dog image as well as the bone come from a little Pink and Main set which was a freebie at the end of last year. (Here is a similar set available to buy.) The tree comes from Simon Says Stamps’ Christmas Cats set. I first stamped the bone and the dog, then masked them off and stamped the tree.

I picked out my patterned paper next as that would help me to chose colours for my image. I have a few different Christmassy patterned papers but settled on this one because it is very cute (which suits the cute dog!) and also I liked that it already had a sentiment.

With the colour scheme determined I started colouring my scene, I used watercolour pencils and tried to get my colours close to those on the patterned paper. I used my Wink of Stella to blend the colours out and add a hint of sparkle. I decided to add a strip of red mirror card along the bottom of the patterned paper, adding some more shine.

I then laid my elements out on a couple of different card bases before settling on the red as it worked well with the elements I had, and of course is a good Christmas colour! I used my glue pen to attach the mirror card to the patterned paper, then attached that panel to my card base with my tape runner. I used foam tape on the back of my banner, having cut a tail into the bottom, which added a bit of extra dimension. As a final embellishment I used my snow pen on the fluffy parts of the Christmas hats.

Christmas Pup 2I’m very pleased with this card. The puppy is really adorable and fits surprisingly well with the Christmas tree (it helps that his hat hides the fish!) I really love the puffiness on the hats, especially on the bird’s one – so cute! I’m also happy with the colouring, though the white parts on the dog look more like grey, and apparently I forgot to add colour to his nose and paw… Oh well.

Love,

Lady Joyful

  1. Wow that is planning ahead, I love the christmas hats and may well have to buy myself a snow pen. The idea of choosing the backing paper first so as to keep your colouring within the same colours is such a great tip so thank you very much. I know it might sound a bit strange but i am new to card carft and was wondering what a ‘wink of stella’ was. sorry if this is a silly question.

    1. The snow pen is fun! Just make sure you shake it plenty before using, else it doesn’t work too well as I found out on a previous card… I think choosing the paper first is much easier than colouring first and then trying to find a paper that matches, though I do it that way sometimes too! Wink of Stella is a glitter pen. It has a brush tip, and you use it to apply shimmer to your projects. It’s not necessarily designed for blending out watercolour pencils, but it works well for the purpose. There are various coloured ones, but I just have the clear version as that is more multi-purpose. There are also Spectrum Noir glitter pens that work similarly.

      1. Thanks for the advice on the snow pen. I will take a look into both wink of stella glitter pen and spectrum Noir as they sound a great versitile tool. thank you! 🙂

      2. No problem! I’ve not tried the Spectrum Noir myself but I believe they’re equally good. Definitely worth having on hand if you like sparkle 😉 I actually need to get a new Wink of Stella soon as mine has nearly run out!

      1. Oh yes! I remember when I was a kid, there was some sort of paint for t-shirts that you had to iron and would do the same thing…must get to Hobbycraft..!

      2. Oh, I had a T-shirt decorated with that stuff! I was maybe 4 or 5. I remember my mum told me I’d made it when I’d gone to have blood taken. For done reason that led me to the conclusion that it was made with my blood… it wasn’t even red!

      3. LOL-love that line of thinking! When my son had to have blood taken at that age I bought him a model of a Sycorax…

      4. LOL-well, I was thinking that your mother got off lightly, getting you a nice t-shirt while I had to procure a strange plastic monster from Dr.Who!
