Unicorn Slider (With Video)

Today’s post is a bit special because it has a video! I’ve been wanting to make videos of my cards for quite a while, and I finally worked out a rig that worked well enough for the filming. It’s not perfect and I definitely have room to improve, but I had fun doing it and would like to do more in future.

The first element I created for my card was the ink blended cloud panel. I used a light blue pigment ink, make up sponge, and a cloud mask cut from a scrap of note paper. Starting at the top I inked across the edge of the mask, moving it and rotating until the panel was completely covered with clouds. I realised that the result was a bit more subtle than I was after so I went back over with a slightly darker blue pigment ink.

Next I took the rainbow and unicorn stamps from Avery Elle’s Be A Unicorn stamp set and stamped them with MFT Black Licorice Hybrid Ink onto a snippet of white card. I used my watercolour pencils to colour the images in, blending it out with Wink of Stella. The card I used is not watercolour card so I had to be careful not to over-saturate the paper. I also stamped a cluster of stars onto the unicorn using Simon Says Stamp Lemon Zest hybrid ink. Once they were coloured in I fussy cut them, then went around the edges with my black sharpie to hide the white core and any areas that weren’t quite cut properly.

At this point I got started on my slider. I worked out where I wanted the rainbow to be on the cloud panel, then drew some lines so that I would know where to put the slider. I wanted to make sure it would be completely hidden behind the rainbow. As I don’t have a suitable slider die I used my craft knife to cut out the channel. I then took some more of the white card and cut it with the smallest Lawn Fawn Simple Puffy Clouds die. This would be the ‘tab’ for pulling the slider.

I cut down a strip of acetate and adhered the unicorn to it with a foam square. I then attached the cloud to a strip of card using another foam square. I put a half square of foam at the top of the cloud’s strip and slipped it into place in my slider channel. Removing the backing paper I attached the bottom of the unicorn’s acetate strip to the top of the foam square. I then backed the cloud panel with a double layer of foam tape, making sure to leave space for my slider to move. I put some more foam tape onto the cloud parts of my rainbow and carefully placed that on the cloud panel to hide the mechanism of the slider.

When I positioned the cloud panel on my card base I felt it was lacking something. I decided to cut a panel of blue mirror card to back it onto. I then laid the panel on my card base so that I could work out where to put my sentiment. The sentiment comes from the Be A Unicorn stamp set, and I again stamped it with the Black Licorice Hybrid Ink. I took a dark blue pencil and added colour to the white areas of the letters.

Lastly I put some strong foam tape onto the back of the slider panel and pressed it into place on the card base. I gave the slider a few more test runs to make sure everything was still working, and the card was done. You can see the slider in motion in the video.

I’m rather pleased with this card. I don’t have a lot of experience making sliders and it definitely took a bit of brain power to figure out exactly how to get it working as I intended. Thankfully it all worked out without any hiccups. This actually isn’t the card I originally had in mind. I was going to do a similar slider card, but I originally intended to have a balloon sliding across the sky. But when I was looking through my stamps I found this one, and decided to make this card instead!
