Waves

When I made this card I had two things in mind. The first was that I wanted to play with my new markers – alcohol and watercolour – and the second was that I wanted to use Crafty Ola‘s Kit of the Month for August, which is called “Sail With Me“.

I started by stamping the boat image from the Sail With Me stamp set onto some white card stock. I then used my Yosoo alcohol markers to colour the image in. I decided to go for red and white stripes on the front sail, with a solid yellow back sail and green flag. The shading on the yellow didn’t work quite as well as I would have preferred – I think the yellow pens I have do not have enough range between the shades. I used several browns for the hull of the boat, and some cool greys for the mast and… the pointy bit at the front and the blocky thing in the centre. If I know the words for them, they’re not coming to mind! I then used a variety of blues to add colour to the waves, going with my lightest closesr to the boat, moving into darker ones further away. When I was initially thinking through colours I did want to add blue to the sky, but I don’t have a pale enough shade, so I left it white.

Once all the colouring was done I added a sentiment from the same stamp set and trimmed down the focal panel. I then looked through the patterned papers that came with the kit. Given the sentiment I had chosen I wanted to use a wave pattern. I found three papers that I thought might work. The first I realised was actually birds not waves… Whoops! The other two were a bit busier than I wanted. So I decided instead to make my own. I took a piece of water colour paper and used my MozArt watercolour markers to draw wave shapes all over it. I then used a brush to blend out the colours, before setting the panel aside to dry.

With all the elements ready I started assembling the card. I used my tape runner to adhere the watercolour paper to a white card base. I then used foam tape to attach the focal panel. As a final touch I added three Silver Pearls  to embellish my focal panel.

I really enjoyed playing with my new pens to make this card, and I’m pretty pleased with the end result! The more I play with the alcohol pens though the more I see how big the gaps in my colours are. I’m definitely going to have to save up for a full set (or perhaps ask for them as a present!) Whilst I’m sure Copics give a better result I am happy with how these are, and they are certainly more in line with my budget, at least at the moment. (If I win the lottery though…!) I am a bit uncertain about the waves on the focal panel, as especially towards the bottom the lines look a bit… harsh? Not quite right, at least. But overall I like the card.
