It’s time for another Cupcake Inspirations challenge! This week we have a colour palette to play with – orange, green and brown. These colours would work wonderfully for any last-minute Halloween cards you might want to make, but are also great for Autumnal cards of any kind. I went with the latter for my card. It’s definitely worth playing along this week as we have a fantastic prize up for grabs – a $25 gift certificate for Newton’s Nook Designs!
I began by printing out the Autumn Jar digi-stamp from Bugaboo. I then got started on colouring it with my alcohol markers. I used a combination of my Yosoo alcohol markers as well as the Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers that I got as a birthday present (which I may have opened early…!) I had intended to use only the SN markers, but as I don’t have a huge selection of them it was helpful to be able to bring in my other markers too. Once I had finished all the colouring I fussy cut the image and set it to one side.
After some contemplation I decided to add some texture and interest to each of the circles by adding tone on tone stamping. I used stamps from the Hot Off The Press Leaves stamp set. I first used Simon Says Stamp Orange Slush die ink to stamp the solid leaf onto the orange circle. I stamped one to be completely within the circle, then stamped again to give the impression that the pattern of leaves continued outside the bounds of the circle. For the little green circle I used SSS Key Lime hybrid ink and stamped part of the largest leaf onto it. Finally I repeatedly stamped the little acorn onto the brown circle, using SSS Barely Beige dye ink.
Once I was happy with all the stamping I began assembling the card. I adhered all of the circles to the card base, with the brown one slightly overhanging, using double-sided tape. I then cut away the overhanging part of the brown circle, and adhered the fussy cut image on top of it using double-sided tape as well as a little glue pen under some of the fiddlier areas.
As a final touch I added a sentiment from the Creative Expression John Lockwood Lily of the Valley stamp set. I used my MISTI to ensure I didn’t mess up the stamping, and stamped it with MFT Black Licorice Hybrid Ink.
I had a few doubts along the way as I made this card, but I’m actually rather pleased with the end result. I had a lot of fun playing with my new pens, even if I didn’t do a perfect job of them, and I’m really hoping to get some more and work towards getting a full set. If I get any birthday money (my birthday is on Monday!) I know what I’ll be using it for! I did amuse myself a bit when I was stamping the circles. The process would have gone a lot quicker if I’d used the largest image (the leaf I used on the green) for the largest circle, rather than having to stamp the acorn a hundred times… But really, the way I did them made more sense colour wise. I think it was the right choice for the design, despite taking a little longer.
Love,
Lady Joyful
