I really love using vellum on cards. Whether it’s to add a sentiment without covering too much of the background, to give a fun soft background, or even to add a little extra something to help pop the focal image, as on this card. So when I learned that the latest challenge at The Male Room would be to use vellum I just needed to decide how I wanted to use it! I ended up going for a quick and simple card – sometimes those kinds of cards are needed!
I started by stamping one of the cats from Simon Says Stamp’s Christmas Cats stamp set onto a piece of white card. I then created a mask for the paws and added stamp the heart from Heffy Doodle’s Interactively Yours using Altenew Ruby Red ink. Masking the paws helped to give the impression that the cat is holding the heart. Having finished all the stamping I worked on the colouring.
I decided to colour the cat to look like our cat Lola. She’s fairly simple to colour as she is mostly white! I used my lightest yellow grey Yosoo marker to add shading to the white areas, including around the heart. I then used my cool greys to colour in her black tail. She also has a black splodge on her side, but I decided that wouldn’t be visible the way the cat is standing. I then used some Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers to add pink to her ears and nose.
Once I’d finished the colouring I used the coordinating die to cut out the image. I also die cut a large heart from a piece of vellum to go behind her. I adhered them together and on to the card base, making sure to hide the vellum on the adhesive behind the cat so that it wouldn’t show through. I added some Wink of Stella shimmer to the heart as well as a highlight with my white gel pen. I did consider adding a sentiment but really wasn’t sure what to use, so I ended up leaving it without.
I’m quite pleased with this card. The subtle vellum heart really does add to the look of it. I definitely think it would be a bit too plain without it. I do wish I’d worked out a sentiment to add to it, though it works well enough without.
