Watercooler Wednesday Challenge #152 – Kath’s “All About Occasions” Challenge

When I was looking through my dies recently trying to come up with a card idea I spotted this hat. It reminded me of the hats that students in Finland wear at Vappu (May Day). I believe it is related to graduation, but is in any case a celebratory day for students. So I decided I would make a card with that in mind. I figured a graduation celebration card is a bit of a different take for our All About Occasions challenge over at Watercooler Wednesday this week!

I started by using the captain’s hat die from the Nautical dies by First edition. I cut it out twice, once from a snippet of white and then again from a snippet of black. I then punched the pieces out and swapped them, to give the white hat a black band and black anchor. I used double-sided tape on the back of the hat to hold everything in place. I then set it aside whilst I worked on the rest of the card.

I decided to stamp and heat emboss my sentiment onto some vellum. I used silver embossing powder, and a Finnish stamp which translates to “today is your day”. I then die cut the vellum with a Sizzix circle die.

I chose some patterned paper from a previous card kit (one from Crafty Ola, which is also where I got the Nautical dies.) I trimmed it down to just smaller than my grey card base, and adhered it into place with some double-sided tape. I removed the backing from the tape on the hat and attached it to the sentiment circle, then added some more tape to the circle where it would be hidden by the hat. I then adhered the panel to the patterned paper.

I’m pretty pleased with this card. It was fairly quick and simple to make, but still came together very nicely. I like the touch of silver for the sentiment, and the patterned paper goes well with the black and white hat. It’s a fairly versatile card too, as the sentiment could allow it to be used for a variety of occasions. I can see it being used as a masculine birthday card, for example.

Lady Joyful

  1. I like the fact that you made a graduation card and that it was inspired by the hat. How perfect. It’s always fun to learn about other places and their traditions, so your preface was wonderful to read. I really like the background paper you chose and the sentiment embossed in the beautiful silver on this card. Thanks for sharing!

  4. So many lovely parts to this card, Charlotte! What a cute hat they’ve chosen for graduation in Finland! And what perfect, colourful paper you’ve chosen as a background. Love those random stripes. Having the sentiment on vellum and heat-embossed in silver–brilliant.
