If you know me at all you will know that I love animals. That love often shows up in my cards, as I often feature cute animals of one type or another in my cardmaking. As such the latest Cupcake Inspirations Challenge is perfect for me – the theme is pets! We’re sponsored this time around by Your Next Stamp who are providing a generous $20 gift certificate to one lucky winner.
I began my card by using the Your Next Stamp Cute Cat Bookmark die set to cut a whole bunch of snippets, then adhered them altogether to create a ginger tabby cat bookmark. You can see the process in the video below, as well as seeing two other cats I made with the dies.
Once the cat was ready I moved on to creating the rest of the card. Wreath stamping is popular at the moment, so with the help of my MISTI and a wreath-stamping stencil I stamped out a wreath of paw prints onto my card base. The paw prints are from several different sets – the largest is from Three Room Studio’s Wind In Your Fur stamp set, the small paw is from Paper Smooches’ Chubby Chums, and the little trail of paws is from Papermania’s Little Meow stamp set. I used Orange Slush and Lemon Zest inks from Simon Says Stamp to stamp out the wreath, and positioned it somewhat offset towards the top left corner.
After completing the wreath I worked on my attachment method for the cat. I wanted the bookmark to be a usable element that can be removed from the card, so I didn’t want to just glue it into place. Instead I took a large snippet of the same blue card I had used for the cat’s bow and white heat embossed a sentiment from Paper Smooches’ Chubby Chums onto it. I also added “lift me” and an arrow from Heffy Doodle’s Interactively Yours to indicate to the recipient that the bookmark can be removed.
I trimmed the sentiment panel down to be a little wider than the cat bookmark, and slid the two pieces together. Turning it over I added a narrow strip of foam tape on either end such that it would create a channel for the cat to be able to slide in and out of. I then attached it to the card base.
I am very happy with this card. I had so much fun making the cat bookmarks (hence having made three different varieties!) and I actually went on and played with the add-on dies too (video coming soon) to make the other suggested animals, as well as playing around making custom animals beyond the intended scope of the dies (that will be coming soon, too!) The wreath stamping technique was really fun too, and was good practice for a huge project I have coming up in the next few months. I like the colours on this card and think that all the elements came together perfectly. Some of the stamping didn’t work out as well as I would like, but honestly I’m so happy with the result that I can overlook the mistakes!
Love,
Lady Joyful

So cute Charlotte! You and I must have been exchanging thought waves – the other day I sat and made up three animal cards in a similar fashion – but it’s secret for now as it’s gonna be a Playground prize shortly! Isn’t it fun building up the little faces – mine aren’t bookmarks, though. And a totally different manufacturer. Such a great idea and beautifully made!
