Birthday Poppies – IWD March 19 – April 1

The newest challenge at Incy Wincy Designs is all about working with less. We’re challenging you to make a card using no more than three colours. I used just two for my inspiration card. If you come and join in with us you could win a prize from one of our sponsors – Bugaboo Stamps are offering a $12 gift voucher, and SheepSki Designs are offering three images.

As is usual when I work with digital stamps I started by printing my image onto some alcohol marker friendly paper. The image I used is Poppies from SheepSki Designs. I coloured the image in with Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers and Yosoo alcohol markers. For the petals of the flowers I used a reddish brown to lay in my shadow areas, then used two shades of red to complete the image. I tried to give the impression of tucks and folds in the petals to make them seem more realistic. I then used greens for the stems and buds of the flowers.

I decided I would add some extra interest to my card base by stamping some stripes along the bottom of it. The stamp is from Simon Says Stamp Crafty Friends stamp set (which came in the Simon Says Stamp February Card Kit) and I used Altenew Forest Glades dye ink to stamp it across the bottom edge of a white card base. I then added a strip of red washi tape to help delineate the area between the panel and the card base.

I used foam tape to pop up my sentiment onto the card base. I then die cut a happy birthday die (which came in the Love From Lizi February card kit) from black card, coated it with embossing ink and clear embossing powder, then heat set to give a shiny finish. I adhered that to my card, overlapping the image slightly.

I really like this card. I’m very happy with how the flowers look, and it was fun working out how to put in the extra folds. There are some places that I feel I didn’t get it quite right, but I was able to disguise the worst of it by putting my sentiment over the top. And speaking of the sentiment, embossing die cuts is a technique I don’t use very much but I do really like how it looks. I will have to try and do it more often!

Love,

Lady Joyful
