Lots of Roses – Mari Ko Creations March 2018 Release

Yesterday I shared a card using one of the sweet cacti from the latest Mari Ko Creations release. Today I have another card made with a new release image. Lots of Roses comes with a variety of sentiments for a total of three different ‘flavours’, and I chose to use the birthday one for this card.

I printed the image onto some alcohol marker friendly paper and used my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers to colour it in. I decided to go with yellow flowers and yellow-green leaves.

I coloured the flowers first, starting with laying in the shadow areas then working towards the lightest areas. Initially it can be a bit tricky to differentiate between some of the flowers, but the more colour is put in the easier it is to see which petals belong where.

The leaves were also coloured from darkest to lightest, and with the whole image coloured I went back in to deepen my shadows. I also add cast shadows to the sentiment strip to give the impression that it is popped up above the rest of the image rather than being flat.

I’ll be honest, I found this image a bit intimidating at first. There is a lot to colour and at first glance it can be difficult to see what belongs where. However, working a petal at a time and seeing how it fits with the next one actually results in a very easy to colour image. And it does look lovely once it is complete!
