Mushroom Elf – IWD April 16th-30th

I’m a few days late with this post, but better late than never! The latest Incy Wincy Designs Challenge started at the beginning of this week, and we’re looking for cards with spots, dots and circles. We have two sponsors for this challenge – Fabrika Fantasy are offering 3 images and Cute As A Button are offering 2.

For my card I began by printing the Mushroom Elf image from sponsor Fabrika Fantasy onto some alcohol marker friendly paper. I printed the image fairly large so it would fill my card front nicely.

I then moved on to the colouring using my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I started with the little elf’s skin. I usually colour skin quite pale but I have a new set of markers I wanted to play with, and I thought a darker skin tone might be appropriate, so I experimented with that.

For the elf’s outfit I wanted it to be colourful but also not too bright. I went with turquoise shades for the hat, yellow for the shirt and shoes, and blue for the trousers. I used slightly paler yellow shades for the butterfly’s wings, with a touch of purple on the spots.

For the mushrooms I had to bring in some of my Yosoo alcohol markers as I don’t have reds in the Spectrum Noir markers yet. I again tried to keep the colour a bit more muted rather than a very bright red. I then used my white gel pen to add spots to the mushrooms. I decided to make the little apple green so that it wouldn’t be competing with the red of the mushrooms.

Once all my colouring was completed I adhered the panel to my card base. I added a sentiment from Simon Says Stamp’s Kind Flowers stamp set, using MFT Black Licorice Hybrid ink. I then decided to use another stamp from the set, a cluster of three little circles, to stamp a background behind my image. I used Altenew Mountain Mist dye ink for this.

I really like this cute image and think it makes a fun card. The background was a last minute decision but it turned out nicely and is ideal for the theme of the challenge. It took me a while to decide what sentiment to use, because the first few I considered did not fit well size wise. I think the one I chose in the end works nicely though.
