Pastel Christmas – CIC 446

I created a non-traditional Christmas card for our latest challenge over at Cupcake Inspirations. We have a pastel theme this fortnight, and are sponsored by STAMPlorations who are providing a $20 gift certificate to one lucky winner. I wanted to use a sponsor product, and the only stamp set (currently) that I have of theirs is a Christmas themed one, so that’s what I decided to go with!

First I positioned one of the deer and a sentiment from the Yuletide Deer stamp set onto my card base, then stamped and heat embossed them with Love From Lizi‘s Golden Crown fine detail embossing powder. I then masked off a rectangle on the card base such that the deer and sentiment would be slightly beyond the edges of it. I used Milled Lavender Distress ink to create a soft background. I then shifted my bottom masked area down and added a line of Spun Sugar Distress ink.

I wanted to make my deer stand out a bit more from the background, so I decided to colour in the segments using my watercolour pencils. I used pink where the deer overlapped the Spun Sugar, purple where it overlapped the Milled Lavender, and grey where the antlers went outside the ink blended areas. I then used clear Wink of Stella to blend out the watercolour pencil for a smoother finish.

I felt like the card still needed a little something extra, so I added score lines all along the edges of the ink blending. It doesn’t show very well in the pictures, but it helped to add some subtle definition to the card.

I’m pretty pleased with this card. The layout certainly was a fun one to play with. I do enjoy the way this one layer card gets the look of dimension by having the deer overlapping the boundaries of the ink blended area. The colour is perhaps not quite as pastel as I would have liked. The deer especially seemed to end up a bit brighter than what I was going for. But I think it works out well enough.
