Our new challenge at Incy Wincy Designs starts today. This time around we have an inspiration image, based on an interesting phone case. I picked up on the ombre colours for my design. We have two sponsors this time around. Little Blue Button Stamps are offering a $10 voucher, and A Day For Daisies are offering a $12 voucher, so be sure to play along for your chance to win!
I started by printing the Water Baby Play Digi stamp from A Day For Daisies onto some alcohol marker friendly paper. I sized the image so that it would nicely fill a card front. I then started colouring using my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers.
Taking the phone case as inspiration I started by colouring the mother mermaid’s tail. I went with a gradient from pink to purple to blue. I then moved on to the baby mermaid and coloured her red-orange-yellow with the same orange gradient in mind.
Next I worked on the skin and hair I went with a fairly light skin tone for both mermaids. I then used some darker browns for the hair, though I kept the baby’s hair slightly lighter than the mother’s.
Rather than bringing in too much extra colour I decided to use some teal colours for the starfish and other accessories. I then used a very light blue-green to completely fill out the background of the panel to give the look of water.
I’m happy with how this card came together. I think it is a sweet new baby card, and I do really like the illustrative style of the images. I struggled with the background a bit as the colour I used seems as though it may be drying out, so it’s a bit patchier than I’d prefer. Overall though I am pleased with the result.
