Designer Creative Challenge – Let’s Get Colouring

It’s Designer Creative Challenge time again at Craftin Desert Divas.  This week we’re focusing on colouring and trying to come up with a variety of suggestions on how to colour up your images. Be sure to head over to the blog post to see what the rest of the team created. I made three cards and tried to give a couple of different ideas of what you could do.

Card 1 – Panda Party

I kept my first card straightforward. I arranged images from Panda Cake and Cupcake Cutie Panda together in a word document, and added the sentiment which is from Panda Cake. I then printed it on to alcohol marker friendly paper. (I actually printed the components for all the cards income go.)

I used my  Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers to do the colouring. I went with quite soft colours. I chose a soft cream colour for shading the pandas as I felt it was more cake-like than using greys. I went with a soft blue-green for the cake stand, then added pink and blue to complete the other accent elements.

I’ve been having some issues with my printer causing smudges on my paper and it happened again with this one. (We have a new printer ordered, so hopefully it will no longer be an issue!) Luckily by trimming the panel down I was able to remove most of the smudging.

I picked a pink card base to go behind my white panel, and decided to also bring in some more of the green colour with some paper that matched. I added some sparkle with my Wink of Stella clear glitter pen then adhered the strips to the edge of my white panel before adhering it to the card base.

Card 2 – Panda Cupcake

I took a slightly different approach for my second card and did some paper piecing. I printed the Cupcake Cutie Panda image onto alcohol marker friendly paper as well as onto some patterned paper from my stash. I fussy cut the cupcake on the alcohol marker friendly paper and just the liner from the patterned paper.

I used my alcohol markers to add shading to the panda, as well as onto the patterned paper to help it pop. I then adhered the cupcake liner to the main image.

As another method of colouring I bought in my Nuvo Drops in Bubblegum Blush and Sea Breeze to add some accenting. I used Bubblegum Blush for the nose and Sea Breeze for the bow. I actually did colour the bow with my markers first as the Sea Breeze is translucent and I wanted to make sure there was enough colour. Of course you could also use it without doing the marker colouring for a different look.

For the background I stamped the Happy Birthday sentiment from Simply Said repeatedly onto the card base using Altenew’s Aqualicious ink. I used my MISTI to help with the positioning. I didn’t actually stamp the whole of the middle column as I knew the image would cover most of it.

For my final element I white heat embossed “congrats!”, which is also from Simply Said, onto some black card and trimmed it down. I then used liquid glue to adhere all the elements to the card.

Card 3 – No Bunny Like You

I thought I’d try to think outside the box for my third card. I used the Bunny Popsicle, which was released this month, along with a sentiment from No Bunny Like You. I printed my smaller bunnies to be paler than the large one, then lightly coloured them with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I then fussy cut them all out and adhered them in a random pattern onto my panel with the sentiment.

For my focal bunny I thought I’d try colouring with stamping. I used the “Sweet Treats” sentiment from Simply Said and stamped it all over the bunny. I used Hero Arts’ Butter Bar ink for the bunny itself, and Caramel for the stick. I went over the stomach area of the bunny with a white pencil just to make it a bit paler than the rest. I then fussy cut it out and adhered it onto my main panel.

I again pulled out my Nuvo Drops. I used the Bubblegum Blush to colour in the cheeks, nose and inner ears. I then used Limoncello to add interest to my panel. It also helped me to fill in any blank areas of the pattern. Finally I adhered the panel to a card base.

I had so much fun making these cards. I think the second one is my favourite – which do you like best? I wasn’t keen on the third one initially though I thought the idea of it was interesting. It has grown on me though!
