Designer Creative Challenge – Smiles Across The Miles

This week’s Designer Creative Challenge is Smiles Across The Miles. I really love making cards that will make the recipient smile, and it makes me happy that I can bring a smile to my loved ones’ faces despite us living so far apart. The cute images from Craftin Desert Divas are just perfect for inducing smiles. I also find that using punny or otherwise silly sentiments is a great option too! I didn’t add a silly sentiment on this one, but I think it will make the recipient smile anyway.

First I printed the Cactus Coffee image onto some alcohol marker friendly paper. Usually my next step would be colouring the image in but I decided to add my ground first.

I masked off the lower portion of the card and roughly masked the pot too. I then ink blended Tea Dye Distress Ink across the card until I was happy with the coverage. I added some brightness and depth to the blending by going in with Spiced Marmalade across the top portion of my blended area.

I then removed my masks and coloured the image with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I kept the pot the cactus in as a fairly similar brown to the ground I’d created. I then chose to go with a bright green for the cactus itself. I tried to keep some quite high contrast between the shadows and the highlight areas.

Initially I coloured the coffee cup blue, then used a reddish pink combination for the heart and flower. However, I decided to change the blue cup to the same reddish pink. The decision was partly because I didn’t have blue anywhere else, so the colour wasn’t really tied in. Also having the cup red too created a visual triangle of the red elements, which is pleasing to the eye.

I added a sentiment from Simply Said alongside the cactus in the ground area, then finished off the image by adding some white gel pen highlights.

What do you think? Can I send smiles across the miles with this card? I haven’t yet decided who I will send it to, but I am behind on my card sending so I’m sure I can find a use for it! Be sure to head over to the Craftin Desert Divas blog to see what the rest of the team made, as well as find a whole bunch of tips on sending smiles across the miles!

  1. A really great one layer card – I love the image and you have brought it to life with your beautiful colouring – those white gel pen finishing touches really complete it! Thanks so much for playing along with us at Time Out! Jill
