TMR 92 | Wild And Free

I often see people asking which are better – Distress Oxides or Distress Inks. It’s not an easy thing to answer. For one thing, it’s very subjective. What you prefer to use is really up to you. It can also be very situational – sometimes the Oxides are the better choice, sometimes the Inks. And, if course, you can even use them together! That’s what I did for this card.

I started by creating my background using the smooshing technique. I used four different inks – Squeezed Lemonade and Wild Honey Distress Oxides, followed by Spiced Marmalade and Tea Dye Distress Inks. The water I used to spritz them with contained Perfect Pearls which helped add some shimmer to the design.

Next I stamped the lion from Simon Says Stamp’s Wild Cuddly Critters onto a snippet of watercolour paper. I stamped it with MFT Black Licorice Hybrid Ink, then used my Distress Inks to paint it. I used the Tea Dye for the body of the lion, and a mixture of Tea Dye and Spiced Marmalade for the mane. Once I was happy with the colour I fussy cut the lion out.

I took a snippet of black card for my sentiment panel and white heat embossed my sentiment. I combined words from two Heffy Doodle sets – Ad-roar-able Lions and Happy Snappy Crocs. I then trimmed the panel down and adhered it across my smooshed panel. I added the lion onto the panel and adhered it to my card base, then finished off with some Nuvo Drops in Limoncello.

My plan for this card changed a bit as I went along. The starting point was the smooshing, which I had a lot of fun with, but I really wasn’t sure of my plan after that. I considered stamping the lion directly onto the smooshing, which would have been an interesting look, but in the end decided not to do that. I had also intended to have the card landscape rather than portrait, but stamped my sentiment off centre. Rather than restamping it I just flipped the panel around, trimmed the sentiment, and made the card portrait. I think it works, and I’m happy with the end result.

  3. Yes, I do like your splashy ink background and like you, I often use both of those inks together – tbh I generally choose which to use depending on colour and I have no intention of getting the same colour in both ink types. I do think your lion card is ado-roar-able! Thanks for joining The Library.

    1. Thank you! I don’t have many of the colours in either, and most of the ones I do have I either won or got in card kits. It’s nice that I can mix and match them.
