I’m back today with another look at the Craftin Desert Divas’ September release. Yesterday I shared a card using Bat-tastic Unicorn, which you can find here if you missed it. Today I’m sharing another clean and simple card, this time featuring the Frankenstein cake.
I started by printing the digi stamp onto alcohol marker friendly paper, then used my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers to colour it in. I went with orange for the pumpkin part of the cake, and green for the Frankenstein’s monster. I decided to give him purple hair, and of course coloured the neck bolts grey. I used grey too for the spider, yellow for the cake stand, and then yellow, green and purple for the assorted sweets.
Once I’d finished my colouring I carefully fussy cut the image out. I usually do my fussy cutting right up to the line, but I chose to leave a white border around the image on this occasion, mostly because of the spiderweb. That was the trickiest part to cut around, but otherwise the image was fairly simple to cut out.
Setting my image aside I started working on the background. I chose to do some ink smooshing for this. I started with my lightest colour, Squeezed Lemonade Distress Oxide, and pressed it onto some acetate. I sprayed the ink with water containing a little Perfect Pearls, then smooshed it onto my watercolour panel. I dried the layer and then repeated the process with Wild Honey, then Spiced Marmalade Distress ink, and finally Tea Dye Distress ink. With each subsequent colour I created a smaller smooshed area so that the darkest colour, the Tea Dye, was much more restrained than the lightest.
When my background panel was completely dry I worked out where I wanted to place my image, and used that as a guide for positioning my sentiment. The sentiment is from Simply Said and I stamped it with the Wild Honey Distress Oxide.
I used double-sided tape to adhere the panel to an orange card base, and finally popped up my image into place with some foam tape for added dimension. Finally I added a few Nuvo Drops, keeping them subtle by using Limoncello which is very similar in colour to the background.
The Frankenstein cake is such a cute image. Whilst it is definitely Halloween-themed I love that it could also be used for other purposes. Perhaps a birthday card for someone who’s birthday is close to Halloween (like mine is!) Or just for someone who loves creepy-cute things, or Frankenstein, or cake! Make sure to check out the Craftin Desert Divas blog to see what has been released today, and check back there on the 28th for a blog post about all the digi stamps from this release.
Love,
Lady Joyful
