Craftin Desert Divas September Release | Frankenstein Cake

I have one more card to share with you using the latest release from Craftin Desert Divas. I’ve previously shared another card using this cute Frankenstein cake which you can find here, as well as two cards with the Bat-tastic Unicorn which are here and here.

I decided to try watercolouring with a digi for the first time with this card. (I’ve already shared my second attempt at doing it.) I began by printing the image onto some watercolour paper and immediately sprinkling the ink with clear embossing powder and heat setting. I did this because my printer ink is not waterproof. By heat embossing I will be able to use water-based techniques without the ink bleeding.

Next I worked on colouring the Frankenstein Cake using my Gansai Tambi watercolour paints. I’m not a painting expert – I just did what I thought looked good, and worked in layers. I mostly applied the paint to the left-hand side of the image, or any other area that I felt would have shadows, and then bringing it across with water to blend out to the lighter area on the right-hand side.

Once I was happy with my painting I used my heat tool to speed up the drying process. I then applied plain water to the entire background of the panel, making sure not to get the cake wet. I sprinkled Black Brusho powder over the top, allowing it to spread through the water. I used a paintbrush to help with the movement and kept adding water and Brusho until I was happy with the look. I let it dry, then added a little more below the cake to give a shadow.

For my sentiment I used the scripty “Celebrate” from Say It Big. I used my MISTI to help me get it lined up, then heat embossed it in white to ensure it would show up clearly against the dark background.

I adhered my watercolour panel to my card base with double-sided tape. I like to use a very wide tape that covers the entire panel, then carefully adhere it to the card base. The full coverage ensures that even a warped panel sticks well to the card base.

Whilst it may not be my favourite card I made for the release (I generally prefer cleaner styles) I had a lot of fun making this card. I’m glad I tried my hand at painting my digi stamp, and I expect I’ll do it more in future. Make sure you check out the Craftin Desert Divas blog to see more of the release!
