It’s new challenge time at The Male Room! Actually it started a couple of days ago, but I had to wait for my cardstock order to arrive to be able to finish my card! I still can’t believe I managed to completely run out of card bases… This time we’re looking for my bad/sorry projects. These could be an apology for messing up, saying sorry for missing a special day, or even a sympathy card. Just remember to make it masculine.
I decided to use Hero Arts’ Color Layering Mangrove Stamp set for my card. I stamped the solid base layers of the trunk and leaves with MFT Black Licorice Hybrid ink onto a snippet of white card stock. I then used silver embossing powder to add the detail layer. Once they were completed I cut them out with the coordinating dies.
I considered using a white card base (now that I finally have some again!) but felt that it didn’t look right with the white border of the die cut. Instead I created a card base with some black card. I used the same Love From Lizi Silver Dollar embossing powder to create a panel for my background. I used a snippet of patterned paper that I don’t like and covered it with embossing ink, then the powder. I double heat embossed to get a smoother surface. I then adhered the resulting panel to my card base.
I did a little more heat embossing to create my sentiment. I should have done this before adding the panel so that I could have made the panel smaller if needed. As I’d stuck the panel down first without working out the sentiment placement I ended up having to change my choice of sentiment. Luckily the sympathy sentiment from Craftin Desert Divas’ Simply Said fit well in the space I had available, so I used that.
I used Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue to adhere my mangrove tree into place. I left the very left portion without adhesive as the silver panel has some slight dimension so the tree would have bent if I had tried to adhere that portion to the card base. As a final touch I added some Nuvo Drops to the card. I used Liquid Mercury for the cluster of drops on the card base, and Ebony Black for those on the silver panel. My Ebony drops did spit a bit due to an air bubble, but the smooth embossed surface was easy to wipe clean and I was able to remove the mess entirely.
I don’t often make matching envelopes but decided to create a simple coordinating one for this card. A black envelope would have been best but as I didn’t have any I chose to use white instead. I then heat embossed the flap of the envelope with the Silver Dollar embossing powder.
I think this card turned out really nicely. Sympathy cards are definitely not fun cards to make, especially when they are needed. I don’t have many in my stash – in fact I don’t think I have any, and I needed one to send out. The silver and black works well for the theme, and also keeps it feeling masculine though it could be used for gender neutral too. Whilst I went for the somber side of the “sorry” theme you definitely don’t have to create a sympathy card to link up with us.
