It’s time for a new release at Craftin Desert Divas! We’re getting in the Christmas spirit with this month’s release. Today is day two of the sneaks, and you can see more sneak peeks over on the Craftin Desert Divas blog. For my card today I’m showing you a project I made with the new Cheerful Snowman digi stamp.
I started by printing the Cheerful Snowman along with a sentiment (which comes with one of the images that will be revealed tomorrow!) directly onto my card base so that I could make a one layer card. I then got started on colouring the image in.
I used Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers for all my colouring. I first used a very pale blue to add shading to the snowman. I chose blue rather than grey because I wanted to give the snowman a cold feel. I used a more intense blue to colour the snowman’s tongue, and a grey blue for the inside of the mouth. I used yellow-orange for the snowman’s carrot nose, and also for the robin’s beak.
I chose to go with traditional Christmas colours for the accessories on the image. I used reds for the snowman’s hat, and some of the parts of the baubles. I also used the same red to colour the robin’s chest. I then used green for the robin’s hat, some of the other bauble elements, and the dots and some stripes on the scarf.
For the other stripes, remaining portions of the baubles and trim of the hats I used a pale grey, and a darker grey combination for the snowman’s buttons. Finally I bought in some browns to colour the main body of the robin and the snowman’s arms.
I decided I would complete the scene by adding some snowy hills. I hand cut a sloping mask and carefully ink blended with Tumbled Glass Distress Oxide to create some pale shading to the hills. I had to be very careful in part because my image wasn’t masked off and I didn’t want to get any ink on it, but also because my printer ink is not waterproof so ink blending across it can cause smearing. I did smear the sentiment a little but was able to almost entirely fix it using my Tombow Mono Sand Eraser.
The last thing I added to my card was some sequins. Actually, a lot of sequins! I wanted to use them to look like falling snow. I used the gorgeous Shimmer Sequins and played around a bit working out where to position them. I made sure some overlapped the image as the snow would be falling in front of the scene too. Once I was happy with it I used my Quickstik tool to pick up one sequin at a time then adhered them back into place with some Glossy Accents.
This image is so cute and definitely worthy of its name – that snowman really is cheerful! I’m really happy with how the card turned out. The smearing of the ink was a bit frustrating, but otherwise I love the look of the snowy ground and think it’s really effective. The sequin snow adds a lot of fun too, and I’m glad I decided to add it. Do make sure you visit the Craftin Desert Divas blog to check out what else is being released!
Love,
Lady Joyful
