Coloring for Non-Colorers | Designer Creative Challenge | Craftin Desert Divas

This week at Craftin Desert Divas our theme is all about colouring for non-colourers. We’re giving examples of ways you can colour your images without having to use markers, paints or pencils.

For my card I started by printing the Whale Popsicle digi onto some watercolour paper and immediately heat embossing with clear embossing powder. For some reason the powder didn’t stick to the lines very well this time, though I’ve had success with the technique before, so I had to be a bit more careful colouring the whale.

I used Distress Oxides and inks to do my colouring. First I blended the main body of the whale. I masked the horn, stick and tummy of the whale so they wouldn’t get coloured yet and used a combination of Cracked Pistachio, Mermaid Lagoon, and Stormy Sky Distress Oxides. For the areas where the embossing hadn’t properly taken I had to use a pouncing motion to avoid the lines smudging, but luckily I was able to get a good blend.

After changing my masks I blended the tummy of the whale using Tumbled Glass Distress Oxide. I then blended the stick with Tea Dye Distress ink. At this stage I didn’t add any colour to the horn. Having done all my blending I fussy cut the image out and set it aside.

I used another panel of watercolour paper for my background along with the ink smooshing technique. For the smooshing I used the same colours I’d used on the whale – Cracked Pistachio, Mermaid Lagoon, Stormy Sky and Tumbled Glass. The water I used for spritzing contained Perfect Pearls which added some shimmer to the background.

When the background panel was dry I adhered it to a blue card base using a very wide double-sided tape. I stamped a sentiment from Say It Big using Stormy Sky ink then adhered my whale into place with foam tape.

For further embellishment I used clear iridescent peel-offs to border my image panel. I also added a sprinkling of Mermaid Lagoon sequins which I adhered with Glossy Accents. Finally I added Sea Breeze Nuvo Drops to add a hint of colour and shine to the horn.

There are so many fun ways to approach colouring even if you don’t consider yourself a colourer. The ink blending technique I used is pretty straightforward but you could also try paper piecing, adding colour by stamping, all sorts of things! There will be a ton of other inspirational ideas shared in the Craftin Desert Divas blog and social media over the coming week, so be sure to check back for more ideas.

  1. Such a cute whale, I mean Popsicle ! Love your colouring and your gorgeous smooshing background. I’m curious to know which kind of printer you use to be able to heat embossed with EP. Gorgeous dimension done with the glitter along the edges of the white panel and the blue sequins. Thanks so much for sharing and for playing along at Less is More. x

    1. Thank you 😊 I have Canon Pixma TS3150 but as far as I understand any printer should work. You need to print with high quality setting to maximise how much ink is used, and get the powder on as quickly as possible after printing so that the ink doesn’t have time to dry before the powder is on. Thicker lined images will work better, because they will have more ink. Hope that helps 😊
