It’s time for the new release at MKC Digitals and we’re definitely getting in the Christmas spirit! You can see more of the release on the blog and check it out over in the shop too, where the new release images are all 25% off!
I used the Christmas Coffee digi stamp for my first card of the release. I arranged it with one of the sentiments from Holiday Sentiments and printed them directly onto my card base to make a one layer card. I chose to keep the image quite big as I really want it to be the focus.
I used my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers to colour in the image. I went with creamy tones to colour the main portion of the cup to give it the look of being a warm shade of white. I then shaded the lid with greys for a cooler look.
Keeping with the neutral tones I chose some rich earthy browns for the wrap on the cup. I really wanted to get good dimension so I went over it a couple of times until I was happy. At this point I realised the cup itself didn’t have enough dimension so I went back and increased the contrast a bit.
I don’t have a large selection of red markers. In fact I only have one red, which I do sometimes use with some of my deeper pinks for the highlights. I didn’t want a deep pink poinsettia though, and as I couldn’t go with the traditional rich red I decided to do a white poinsettia. I used the same colour combination I had used for my previous colouring of a white flower, which is a light yellow green for the shadow area, cream for the midtone, and the blender pen to soften out to the highlights.
For the green leaves of the poinsetta I went with some dark, intense green tones to add a pop of colour to my otherwise very neutral image.
I really like how this card turned out. The image is nice and simple to colour and works beautifully on a one layer card like this, and the sentiment goes with it perfectly. I had considered adding some shading to ground the image but I felt that the sentiment actually added some grounding in itself. The poinsettia definitely adds a Christmas feel to the coffee cup, even when coloured white rather than the traditional red. Whilst I created a one layer card the shape of this image would be fairly simple to fussy cut out to use with dimension too.
Love,
Lady Joyful
