Our new challenge starts today at The Male Room. This time around our theme is nature. It’s a fun theme which can be interpreted in different ways. I chose to use leaves as my nature element, but animals could also be an option. The challenge ends on Chinese New Year, which will be the Year of the Pig, so maybe you’d like to include a pig on your project.
For my card I began by positioning Catherine Pooler’s Marching Leaves stencil onto my cardbase. I masked it off so that only a portion of the stencil would be used. I then ink blended through that portion with Altenew Forest Glades dye ink. I added Evergreen to the round end of each leaf, and blended it out again with the Forest Glades.
After removing the stencil I added my sentiment. I chose one from Clearly Besotted‘s Mini Basic Banners II (which is now retired I believe – there’s a different version available here). I stamped it with Altenew Jet Black ink, slightly overlapping my stenciled area.
As the open letters of the banner allowed the leaves to show through slightly I took my white gel pen and drew over the last couple of letters to help them stand out a bit better. I then took a couple of grey Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers and used them to add a cast shadow to the banner, helping it to pop off of the card more.
I’m rather pleased with the dimension I managed to achieve on this one layer card. It helps to add interest to the clean and simple design. Overall I’m happy with how it turned out. Whilst the design could work well as a masculine or feminine card, I think sticking to the deeper shades of green does help to give it a more masculine feel.
