TMR 105 | Toucan Birthday | No Patterned Papers

Our new challenge at The Male Room is anything goes, which is always popular, with an optional twist of no patterned/designer papers. I don’t use patterned papers all that often so I decided I would definitely twist on my project. I ended up using various leftover snippets to create my card.

My starting point was my alcohol ink background, which I had leftover from creating another card. You can find the blog post for that other card here, plus a video here, if you’d like to see how it was made. I cut the panel down using the biggest die from Mama Elephant’s Framed Tags Lafayette, and kept the inner portion to use on this card. The frame created with the outer portion I will keep to use in future.

Next I die cut my other elements for the card. I used the toucan die that I got in the May 2018 Love From Lizi kit and cut a snippet of black and a snippet of white with it. I then coloured the white beak element with a yellow Spectrum Noir Illustrator Marker. I then pieced the toucan together to get the look I wanted. I also used another snippet of black card to cut a sentiment using the birthday die from the February 2018 Love From Lizi kit.

I used double-sided tape to adhere both the sentiment and toucan to my die cut alcohol inked panel. The black sentiment didn’t stand out as well as I would have liked, so I went over it with my glitter gel pen to help it stand out a bit more.

Next I worked on my card base. I decided to go for a black card base. I used some mirror gold peel-offs, which also came in the May 2018 kit, and added a couple of lines to go behind the main panel. I used just small snippets of the peel-offs so that I wouldn’t be wasting bits behind the panel where they wouldn’t be seen. I then used double-sided tape to add my focal panel into place. As a final touch I bought in three of the golden gems from the Love From Lizi February card kit.

I had fun making this card and am happy with how it turned out. I like that I was able to use up snippets and make use of elements from older card kits. As with the first time I used this alcohol ink background, I love the jungley look it gives and I think it works brilliantly paired with the toucan die.
