I’m on The Little Paper Tree YouTube channel as well as my own channel today sharing my latest design team project. This time I decided to create a one layer scene card, and further challenged myself to keep it monochromatic. I decided to go with yellow as the main colour for my design.
I started by stamping the unicorn and a sentiment from Avery Elle’s Be A Unicorn directly onto my A2 card base. I used Neenah 110lb Solar White card to create the card base, and I stamped with MFT Black Licorice Hybrid ink, which is alcohol marker friendly.
Before starting my ink blending I masked off the unicorn with a mask I’d made for a previous project and kept with the stamp set. I used the MFT Mini Cloud stencil to act as a mask for the lower portion of the card.
I used a stencil from my stash for the sun, but The Little Paper Tree has a couple of great options such as Catherine Pooler’s Twisted Sunburst and the Honey Bee Sunburst Layering Stencil set. I laid the stencil into place, then ink blended over it with Squeezed Lemonade Distress Oxide. I allowed the colour to fade out as I got further from the centre of the sun.
Once I was happy with how the sun looked I removed that stencil and started adding my clouds. I tried to keep the colour less intense than I’d used for the sun itself, as the clouds would just be reflecting the light from it. I created three lines of cloud.
Having completed all my ink blending I removed the stencil and mask, and began colouring my unicorn. First I put some pale yellow to mark the highlights where the yellow light of the sun would be shining. I blended it out with my blender pen. I then went on to colour the unicorn as if it was white, simply adding grey to the areas that would be in shadow.
I used coloured pencils to add a little extra detail to the unicorn, helping to enhance both the highlights and the shadows. I also added just a touch of pink to the nose and inner ear of the unicorn. I added yellow to the open areas of the sentiment with the same yellow, and also added a cast shadow below the unicorn to help ground it.
The final element I added to the card was some Nuvo Glitter Drops in Yellow Bird. I added them onto the unicorn’s horn, as well as using some to add further embellishment to the card.
I am reasonably pleased with this card. I’m happy with how the cast light looks, but I feel like the background is lacking depth a bit. I should perhaps have added more depth to the clouds to help them stand out a bit better. In any case making a monochrome card is always a fun challenge, as is making one layer cards, and I enjoyed combining the two.
Love,
Lady Joyful
