We have a new challenge starting at Cupcake Inspirations today, and our theme is inspirational quotes. We are sponsored by All Dressed Up for this challenge, and if you decide to link up with us you will have a chance to win two of their lovely digital stamps. We hope to see you there!
I started by doing an internet search for inspirational quotes, and picked out one by Maya Angelou. I typed it out and arranged it alongside the Mermaid Kisses digi from our sponsor. (You can see another card I made with this digi here.) I then printed the image and sentiment directly onto my card base.
After printing I started colouring my image using my Spectrum Noir Illustrator Markers. Usually I would colour hair and skin first, but this time I started with the mermaid’s tail and top. I used a variety of blue shades for my colouring, to match the blue I had included in the sentiment. As is my norm, I coloured as though my light-source is coming from the top right. I did add some shading to the right-hand side of the tail though to help give a more rounded appearance.
Once I was happy with the tail I moved onto colouring the mermaid’s skin, and then her hair. I went with yellow-orange shades for the hair to complement the blues I had used. I do struggle with hair a bit, but I’m quite pleased with how it turned out on this card. I kept the shells in her hair quite plain, just adding a touch of shading in a creamy tone. I used a couple of different light blues to colour the fish, as I didn’t want to bring in any more colours.
I used my Nuvo Aqua Shimmer pen to add a touch of sparkle to the mermaid’s tail and top, as well as adding flicks of it into her hair. I decided to further enhance the glitter look by adding dots and shine marks to the tail and top using my Sakura Gelly Roll Glitter pen and Sakura Gelly Roll White pen.
I really enjoyed colouring the image for this card. It’s such a sweet image and fun to work with. This was my first attempt at doing a glitter effect with my gel pen and I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. I think I’ll have to experiment more with it in the future! I really like the quote I chose – it makes for a great supportive card, and I think it works well with the image too. I hope my card has inspired you to come and play along with us, and be sure to check out the projects from the rest of the Design Team. You can find them on the Cupcake Inspiration Challenge or directly on their own blogs via the links below.
