We have a new challenge starting at Cupcake Inspirations today, and our theme is Shaped Cards. We are sponsored by Lawn Fawn for this challenge, and if you decide to link up with us you will have a chance to win a gift certificate. We hope to see you there!
I began by creating my card base. I cut and folder a regular sized card base, then die cut it with the largest of Lawn Fawn’s large stitched oval dies. I made sure the die was slightly overhanging the folded edge to make sure that the two pieces of the card would remain together. I then die cut a piece of Neenah Solar White 80lb card stock with the same oval to create my front panel, and set the card base to one side.
Placing the oval panel in my MISTI I started on my stamping. I used the kraken from Lovable Legends, boat from Ahoy, Matey, and a sentiment from Mermaid For You. I stamped them all with MFT Black Licorice Hybrid ink. I then masked off the kraken and the bottom of the boat.
I created my waves with the help of the MFT Mini Cloud Edges stencil which I had flipped upside down. I ink blended over it with Tumbled Glass Distress Oxide. Once I had three lines of waves in place I switched to Stormy Sky and then Mermaid Lagoon to blend my sea down to a more intense colour at the bottom of the panel. I added some water splatter and lifted with a dry paper towel.
Once I was happy with the blending I removed my masks and started on the colouring. I used my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers to colour the images. I kept the colour palette simple, using browns for the hull and masts of the boat, and greens for the sails and flag. I used the same greens to colour the kraken, adding some interest to the design with the addition of stippled dots after finishing the base colouring. I also added interest to the frontmost sale of the shop by adding white gel pen stripes.
With all the elements completed all that remained was to add the panel onto the shaped card base with some Tombow Mono Multi liquid glue.
I had so much fun creating this card and I am really pleased with how it turned out. It’s a simple scene but it works well. I’m particularly happy with the colouring on the kraken. I wasn’t sure at first if the stippling was going to work, but I persevered and the result seems worth it.
I hope my card has inspired you to come and play along with us, and be sure to check out the projects from the rest of the Design Team. You can find them on the Cupcake Inspiration Challenge or directly on their own blogs via the links below.
