With the coffee hop going strong I couldn’t resist making a coffee card for my The Little Paper Tree design team project. (You can see my previous entries to the hop here, here and here.) I kept it clean and simple, and played with the ombre stamping technique for adding colour to my card.
I started by cutting all the elements of the coffee cup plus the coffee word from a snippet of white card. I then, with the help of some post-it tape, laid the letters of the word back into the negative of the die cut and ink blended over them with Tea Dye Distress ink. Alternatively you could ink blend the paper prior to die cutting.
Next I took the Catherine Pooler Designs BFF Background stamp. I measured the main part of the coffee cup against the background and began inking up. I used Squeezed Lemonade, Wild Honey and Worn Lipstick Distress Oxides to do the ombre inking. I started with the Squeezed Lemonade at the top, then the Wild Honey and finally the Worn Lipstick. I went back and forth slightly over the areas the colours met, to ensure a smooth blend between them. I then pressed the die cut coffee onto the inked area to transfer the ink.
I realised that the white die cut coffee sleeve would cover the inked design too much, so I die cut a new one from vellum instead. I then attached the die cut letters to the vellum with liquid glue. I used the same glue to add the lid and the vellum sleeve, hiding the glue behind the letters so it wouldn’t show through.
Having completed my coffee element I placed it on my card base to help with positioning my sentiment. I used words from Heffy Doodle’s Unbearable Without You stamp set and stamped them with the Tea Dye Distress ink I’d used for the coffee word. Distress ink isn’t really formulated for stamping, so I did stamp multiple times to try and get a cleaner look to the words. I then used foam tape to pop the coffee cup up. I chose to place it at an angle, though I also considered attaching it straight on, too.
I am happy with how this card turned out. The ombre inking is a fun technique, and added interest to the coffee cup. I like the ambiguous nature of the sentiment, too. Is it saying life is unbearable without the reader/recipient, or without coffee? What do you think?
Love,
Lady Joyful

Fun way to dress up your coffee cup, Charlotte. Clever idea to use vellum for your sleeve. I thought unbearable without coffee, but then thought your sentiment could be for someone you are missing…another clever twist to your card design. TFS and joining us at STAMPlorations CAS Card Challenge. Hugs..Nancy
