The Little Paper Tree | Layered Background Stamps | Video

In my newest video for The Little Paper Tree I am showing how to get more use out of your background stamps by layering them together. I have a few background stamps in my stash but I don’t get as much use out of them as I would like, so I thought I’d have a look at another way to use them. My first thought was to have a card with just the layered stamp focal panel, but I did later decide to add a cute image to finish off the card.

I started by creating an A2 (4 1/4 by 5 1/2 inches) side folding card base using 110lb Neenah Solar White card. I then used post-it tape to mask off the edges of my card base. I used the full width of the tape so the resulting masking was about an inch all the way around.

Next I inked up the Altenew Wood Palette Background stamp with some Hero Arts Caramel ink (from the Color Layering Pineapple ink cube set.) I bought the card base to the stamp which I had laid on my desk, and pressed it thoroughly to ensure an even transfer of ink.

The Hero Arts ink dried quite quickly so I didn’t need to wait too long before moving onto my next step. I treated my card base with my anti-static powder tool, then inked up the Catherine Pooler BFF Background stamp with embossing ink. I again bought the card base to the stamp and pressed thoroughly to pick up the ink. I then coated with gold embossing powder and heat set.

I removed all of the masks from my card base, then placed it into my paper cutter and scored all around the edges of my masked area. I then added my sentiment. I chose a small sentiment from Heffy Doodle’s Interactively Yours and stamped it just below the focal area, to the right hand side.

Initially I was planning on leaving the card at that point but I wasn’t entirely happy with how it looked. After some consideration I stamped a lion from the Ad-Roar-Able Lions stamp set, also by Heffy Doodle, onto a snippet of 80lb Neenah Solar White card stock using MFT Black Licorice Hybrid ink. I then coloured it in with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers before fussy cutting out and adhering just above the sentiment, overlapping the double-stamped background.

I had fun creating this card and I think layering background stamps really is a great way to get more use out of them and add some fun to creating with them. The stamps I chose, as well as the colour scheme, lend themselves well to a masculine card, but this technique really could be adapted to work with any background stamps. I would suggest not using two really busy designs as they will compete with each other, but one busier and one more open design, or even two open designs, can be layered together for great effect. I think I might have to experiment with my other background stamps too and see which ones layer best together! If you decide to give it a go, I’d love to see what you make – be sure to tag me if you share on social media!

Love,

Lady Joyful
