CIC 471 | Beautiful Birthday | Mermaids | Bugaboo

You might have seen Mer-May being celebrated around the internet over the last few weeks, so what better way to close out the month than with a mermaid-themed Cupcake Inspiration Challenge! For this challenge we are sponsored by Bugaboo, and if you link up your mermaid themed project with us you’ll be in for a chance to win a $12 gift certificate.

For my card I first printed the mermaid from Bugaboo’s Under The Sea Birthday Set onto alcohol marker friendly paper. I then coloured her in with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator Markers and fussy cut her out. She was fairly simple to cut out, though there were one or two pieces (such as a wispy hair) that I cut off completely rather than trying to cut around. I finished her off by adding some dots of white and glitter gel pens to make her tail look glittery.

I originally had a different plan in mind for the background of this card, but when I bought the mermaid to it I found I didn’t entirely like how the two elements looked together. I was really happy with both individually, but they didn’t work together at all. So instead I created a simple ink blended background. I cut a panel of white card to the same size of my card base and worked out where I wanted to place my focal image. I then started ink blending with a little Stormy Sky Distress Oxide ink in the centre, then out to Mermaid Lagoon, and finally Tumbled Glass fading out to white. I splattered on some water to give some extra interest to the background.

For my sentiment I pulled out the Simon Says Stamp Beautiful Mermaids stamp set. I picked out a birthday sentiment and stamped it with the Mermaid Lagoon Oxide. I popped up my focal image into place with some foam tape, then as a final touch I embellished with some bubble like droplets of Sea Breeze Nuvo Drops.

Whilst this card turned out rather different from what I’d originally had in mind I’m really happy with it. Bugaboo stamps are very sweet and this mermaid is no exception. I enjoyed colouring her up, though I think the starfish maybe should have been a different colour. If my card inspires you I hope you will head over to the challenge and join in with us for a chance to win. And if you need more inspiration you can see what the rest of the team made either on the challenge page or directly on their blogs via the links below.
