We have a fun new challenge starting over at The Male Room. It’s time to get crafting for the geeky men in your life with our computers or gaming themed challenge. I made a fun birthday shaker for my take on the challenge.
My plan for this card changed a bit as I went. Originally I wanted to make a small computer screen but I realised I didn’t have letter stamps small enough to work for it. I took a piece of black card and (after a couple of failed attempts) stamped “happy birthday” in binary onto it with embossing ink. I worked out I could fit all the necessary numbers if I positioned the panel in landscape. I then heat embossed it with Love From Lizi Emerald City embossing powder.
Next I cut a frame of silver mirror card, rounder the corners and adhered some acetate to the back of it. I edged it with foam tape, filled it with Love From Lizi Rainbow Wishes sequins, and attached the binary panel to the back.
I added interest to my card base by embossing it with the Subtle embossing folder, then used Tombow Mono Multi liquid glue to adhere the shaker onto it. At this point I realised I had forgotten to add my sentiment, which I had intended to heat emboss onto the window of the shaker. Instead I die cut a sentiment from the same mirror card I’d used for my frame and adhered it into the window.
I had a lot of fun making this card. I feel that adding the message in the binary makes it extra special, even if there are perhaps not many people who would be able to read it! I did find it a bit difficult to get a decent picture of the card, and I think it looks better in real life than in the photos. If my card inspired you I hope you’ll head over and link up with us. There’s also more inspiration from the rest of the team over in the challenge post or directly at their blogs via the links below.
