It’s time for a new challenge at The Male Room. This time our challenge is multiple layers. I generally prefer to make clean and simple cards so I was a little bit uncertain about what to do for this. I did eventually come up with an idea, and this is what I created.
I started by using Mama Elephant’s Framed Tags Lafayette to cut out all the layers I wanted for my card. I just used white card for the layers. I then took the top layer, the smallest of the three, and used it for my stamping.
I thought it would be fun to use a layering stamp as another way of including layers in the design. I chose Hero Arts’ Color Layering Mangrove Stamp set. I first lined up the bottom layer of the leaves and stamped it with Altenew’s Frayed Leaf ink. After letting that layer dry for a couple of minutes I used Forest Glades for the detail layer.
Next I lined up the trunk of the tree. I realised it might have looked better to stamp the trunk first and layer the leaves on top, but I don’t think it mattered too much. I used Catherine Pooler Twilight ink for the trunk. I used the same ink for the detail layer too, which gives a nice tone on tone look.
At this point I assembled my card. I used double sided tape to attach the backmost layer, then popped up each of the next two layers with foam. I am also out of foam tape (waiting for my order of new ones to arrive!) so I had to use up odds and ends of different foam adhesives.
It was only after finishing assembling everything that I realised I hadn’t added my sentiment. I chose one from Craftin Desert Divas’ Simply Said and stamped it with Evergreen ink. It was quite a struggle to get the sentiment stamped as it overlapped an area between the foam squares I’d used, so I had to kind of peel up the corner, slip in a support, stamp, remove the support, and adhere everything back in place. I got it to work eventually, but remembering to stamp it before assembling would have definitely been beneficial!
Despite my misgivings regarding this challenge I’m pretty pleased with the card I ended up with. I really do love the look of layering stamps and every time I used this stamp set I enjoy how it turns out. I must remember to use it more!
