Alcohol Inks On Vellum | Christmas In July Hop | Video

I’m participating in a Christmas in July hop today! (Actually I’m late sharing this blog, so if you follow me on YouTube you may have seen this already!) If you’re looking to get an early start on your holiday cards and are after some ideas then be sure to join us over on YouTube and hop along for plenty of inspiration.

I decided to play with alcohol inks for my card. Yupo paper is the go-to choice for creating with alcohol inks but it can be pretty expensive. Vellum is a much more cost effective alternative and works really nicely.

I started by sprinkling alcohol ink blending solution over my panel of vellum. I then added my first alcohol ink, for which I chose Stream. I used my air puffer to spread the ink a bit, though it didn’t move much. The vellum does seem to absorb the ink slightly quicker than Yupo does. Also it was quite warm when I made the panel which could contribute to it drying quicker.

I followed up with alcohol pearl ink in the colour Tranquil. I made sure to shake it very well before adding it to my panel so that the shimmer was nicely mixed in to the ink. I the worked back and forth adding more Stream, Tranquil and blending solution, puffing with the air puffer in between each, until I was happy with how my alcohol ink panel looked.

After letting my panel fully dry I trimmed down a piece to use on my project. I wanted a strip to go down the centre of my card base. I edged it with Love From Lizi pinstripe peel-offs in Ice Blue, then adhered a felt snowflake, leftover from December’s Love From Lizi kit, over the panel. Flipping the panel over I added more adhesive, hiding it behind the snowflake. I also added a small amount of adhesive behind the peel-offs at the bottom edge of the panel to make sure that would also hold in place.

This was my first time trying alcohol inks on vellum and I think it turned out really nicely. I will definitely try the technique again. I would have preferred a white or silver snowflake as my focal element, but it turns out I don’t have any large snowflake dies so I had to make do! I have for now decided to leave the card without a sentiment, but one could be added on a banner across the centre of the snowflake.
