TMR 128 | Snow Penguin | It’s Snowing

We’re getting chilly over at The Male Room with our latest challenge – It’s Snowing! Here in Southern Finland we’ve had very little snow this winter, and indeed it’s one of the mildest winters on record. But in any case, I created a clean and simple, snowy card for this challenge.

I started by using Catherine Pooler Midnight ink to stamp the penguin from Paper Smooches’ Chilly Chums onto the lower left of my card base. I masked off the penguin, as well as a rounded hill for grounding him, and added two lengths of post it tape to mask a strip of sky behind him.

I used a Scrapbook.com stencil brush to blend Catherine Pooler Something Borrowed ink into my masked strip area. I concentrated the ink towards the top of the card base, letting it fade to a lighter blue closer to the base of the card.

Once I was happy with the ink blending I placed the Falling Snow stencil from Love From Lizi over the card. I then sprayed through the stencil with some water mixed with Perfect Pearls. I let it sit for a moment before dabbing up the excess liquid with a paper towel. This left a slightly shimmery, splatter snow design on the inked area.

I removed all my masking and quickly added colour to the penguin’s features with Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I then checked that my panel was dry before stamping and heat embossing more snowflakes using some of the Chilly Chums accessory stamps. I chose Love From Lizi’s Ivory Pearl Embossing powder for the embossing.

The finishing touch for my card was to add a sentiment. I chose one from Skull and Cross Buns’ Scandi Christmas and stamped it with the Midnight ink.

I had so much fun (or snow much fun, if you prefer!) making this card. Despite being a very clean and simple design it wasn’t the quickest to make as it has various elements to the design. I really like how the snow panel turned out. The slightly golden tone of the embossing powder complements the blue sky nicely. I also think that having the penguin and snowflakes extend slightly past the confines of the ink blending works well – it’s one of my favourite techniques to add depth to a one layer design.

Love,

Lady Joyful
