CIC 486 | Birthday Monster | Brown, Green & White

The first Cupcake Inspiration Challenge of the year has now been open for a week, and I’m back to share a second card I made using our colour theme. In this challenge we’re looking for projects that use green, white and brown. The particular shades of those colours aren’t too important, as long as we can clearly see that you have used those three colours. You can find the first card I made for this challenge here. This time around I decided to create a birthday card.

I started with my focal element. I took a snippet of white card, die cut it with a circle die, then stamped one of the little monsters from Mama Elephant’s Monster Jam onto it using MFT Black Licorice Hybrid ink. I then took the balloon stamp from Heffy Doodle’s Elephant of Surprise and stamped that with the same ink, positioned as though the little monster is holding onto the balloon.

With the image stamped I started on the colouring using my  Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I chose to do the balloon green and the monster brown, though being a monster I could just have easily done the colours the opposite way around! As I usually do, I did my colouring as if the light is coming from the top right hand side. I also added a touch of grey to give shadings to the monster’s little horns, and used a very light ivory to give just a hint of grounding at its feet.

Setting my focal circle aside I started working on the rest of the card. I chose a green card base and added detail to it by stamping the Love From Lizi Candystripe background stamp onto it with Catherine Pooler Lime Rickey ink. The background stamp actually stamps diagonal lines, but I rotated it to create lines that went straight across the card base instead. I then took a large snippet of white card and cut the background panel from that, giving it a diagonal edge as per the sketch I’d taken inspiration from for this design. (I used the same sketch on this card recently.) I added a Brown Mirror Pinstripe Peel-Off from Love From Lizi along the diagonal edge of the panel, then stamped “happy birthday” from the Monster Jam stamp set with Catherine Pooler Midnight ink.

Before assembling the card I decided I wanted a mat for the focal panel. The circle from the Love From Lizi Background Builder 1 die set was the perfect size, so I used that to cut a piece of brown shimmer card stock. I adhered the image circle onto the brown circle with Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue. I then used double-sided tape to adhere the background panel onto my card base before using the liquid glue once again to attach the focal panel into place.

I absolutely love this cute little monster and the balloon goes with it so nicely you almost can’t tell that it’s not actually designed that way! Funnily enough this is the first time I’ve used the Monster Jam stamps despite having had them for a while now. They’re so sweet – I’m not sure how I’ve let them languish unused for so long! Monsters are great for playing with different colour combinations because they really can just be whatever you make them. I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our challenge.
