It’s hard to know what to say. On the one hand being here in Finland I feel so far removed from the current events, but on the other hand my social media feeds are filled with it. I don’t feel I am qualified to comment, but I do care. I see and I hear, and I’m trying to always learn more and understand more, and be the best ally I can.
This morning I saw this freebie digi that The Greeting Farm is offering, and felt inspired to craft with it instead of the card I had planned for today.
I used Word to size and position the digital image ready to print onto my card base. I then coloured it in with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator Markers.
I began by colouring the skin on each girl. For the black skin tone I started with a layer of EB1 across all of the skin areas, then added LV3 – which is a purple – into the shadow areas. Using a purple helps add realistic tone. After that I worked from darkest to lightest, beginning in the shadow areas and working outwards. The colours I used were EB7, EB4, EB2 and EB1. For her open mouth I used AP3 and toned it back by glazing with EB2.
For the lighter skin tone I coloured in the same way, starting with a layer of FS8 before laying in my shadows with a purple, this time the lighter LV1. I then completed the skin working from darkest to lightest with TN3, FS5, FS6, FS7 and FS8.
Next I coloured their hair. I went for blonde and dark brown. The blonde hair is GB4, GY3, GY2 and GY1, whilst the brown hair is EB7, GB9, TN7 and EB4.
I chose blue and blue-green for the girls’ outfits. Looking at the digi in the store I realise now that what I thought were sleeves on the black girl is actually her arms, but I don’t think it’s obvious that I messed that up! I used TB3 and TB1 for the blue top and AB3 and AB1 for the blue-green. I then also bought in some IB1 to shade the edges of the banner just to bring in some extra interest.
It took me some time to decide what else to do with the card. I didn’t want to detract from the focal image. After a lot of consideration I decided to dry emboss a heart die around the image, creating a frame of sorts.
I’m pleased with how this card came out. The Greeting Farm makes great images, and they’re fun to colour. I realised that I mostly only colour straight hair, and I enjoyed trying something else. I do need more practice though.
Don’t forget that this digi is currently being offered for free over at The Greeting Farm. Gina K Designs also have a sheet of supportive sentiments for free, which you can find here. And if you’d like to support black crafters, Kristina Werner has compiled a list here.
Love,
Lady Joyful
