CIC 497 | Sunshine & Flowers | Flowers with Pearls/Sequins

Ready for a new Cupcake Inspirations challenge? We have a theme challenge this week, and we’re looking for cards featuring flowers with the addition of sequins or pearls. We’re also partnering with Double Trouble for this challenge, and they’ve provided a fun tic-tac-toe board to play with. You’re welcome to play along with both challenges.

My card began life as a freebie colouring panel that came with a recent order from Honey Bee Stamps. From looking at their floral stamps on the website at appears as though the arrangement is made with the Spring Blossoms stamps with a couple of the little bees from Busy Bees. I didn’t have any luck finding a set containing the same sentiment, but it could be that I overlooked it!

I coloured the panel in with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers, and if you follow me on Instagram you may well have seen it as I shared the various stages of progress over the last few days, working on it a little at a time as and when I was able.

Rather than colouring all of the flowers the same way I went for a soft rainbow for them, starting with a pinky red in the top left and working all the way down to a purpley colour. Once I had coloured the flowers I used a pale green for the leaves, and greys for the flower centres. I of course went yellow and black for the bees, and bought in a very light blue to shade their translucent wings. I used a yellow on the border of the sentiment strip to tie in the idea of the sunshine as mentioned in the sentiment. I also used a very light grey to add a drop shadow along the edge of the sentiment.

As our challenge theme requires sequins I dug through my stash for something suitable. I came across these beautiful sequins that are clear with a kind of rainbow sheen to them, which beautifully picks up the colour beneath them. I used three different sizes, picking from a couple of different sequin mixes for the variety. One was from Craftin Desert Divas (who sadly no longer exist) and the others were from Love From Lizi’s Rainbow Wishes sequin mix.

As I’d already got the insect and flowers elements from the middle row of the Double Trouble tic tac toe board I wanted to bring in the wood grain too. The coloured panel was card front size, so I trimmed off a quarter inch on each edge. I should have done that before sticking the sequins down, but luckily they were positioned in a way that didn’t affect the trimming.

I cut a large snippet of brown card to one eighth of an inch smaller than my card base, then used Hero Arts Caramel ink to create a tone-on-tone wood design with Altenew’s Wood Palette Background. (If I had it I would have used the Woodgrain Background from Honey Bee Stamps as they were the focus of this design.) Finally I used Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue to adhere the layers together and glue them onto my yellow card base.

I really had a lot of fun with this card. Usually I like to sit down and make a card in one go, even if the colouring takes a while. As the past week was so busy it was easier for me to work on it a little at a time, and it was kind of nice to be able to just do a little here and there when I managed to find the time. I hope my card encourages you to come along and play with our challenge (and perhaps the Double Trouble challenge too!) You can also find more inspiration from the rest of the team, including five talented new members, on the challenge site or directly at their blogs via the links below.
