We have a new challenge starting today at Cupcake Inspirations, and this time around it is a colour challenge. The colours we are using are blue, yellow and white, and how you use those colours is entirely up to you! I decided to make a floral card for my project. I actually started out with different florals but wasn’t entirely happy and set that initial try aside to make this instead.
I started by stamping a flower from Uniko’s Pure Floral: Cosmos onto a blue card base with Catherine Pooler’s Twilight ink. I chose the Twilight ink because I wanted to do some no-line colouring.
I used coloured pencils for my colouring. I don’t use pencils all that often, and I wasn’t using any ‘fancy’ ones. I basically have a bunch of different brands of pencils all mixed up together in one basket so I dug through and used whichever felt right. After a bit of back and forth with trying different things I wound up mostly using Derwent pencils. I worked one petal at a time, starting with a layer of white, then of course colouring the petals yellow. I used an orange and a light brown for adding the shadows, and then went in again with white to really brighten the highlights.
I finished the flowers by using a couple of different shades of green to colour the stems, and grey for the centre of the flowers. Again I went in with my white to enhance the highlight areas.
For my sentiment I chose one from Pink & Main’s Thanks To You stamp set, and stamped it with white pigment ink. Usually I would have heat embossed on white but I wanted to keep this really, truly one layer (and some people would say heat embossing is adding another layer of sorts) so I went for the ink. I will not link to my white pigment ink because I really dislike it… It does not give good coverage. I had to stamp it repeatedly, about ten times. (A perk of having a MISTI. Have you seen the new MISTI? I am still lusting after it…) And even then I ended up colouring over the letters with my white pencil to make it stand out better. I have heard good things about the Unicorn Pigment Ink from Hero Arts if you are looking for a white pigment ink – that’s the one I’m hoping to get to try next.
I considered leaving my card here but felt it still needed something. After a lot of thought I decided to add a frame with my ruler and white pencil. I then took a graphite pencil and blending stamp and added shadowing to the inside of the frame, as well as around the sentiment and the flower in order to give the impression of dimension to the design.
I think this flowery card turned out quite nicely – what do you think? It’s fun to play with a different colouring medium than I usually use. The flowers are not quite as vibrant as I would prefer, but even so I think the colours work nicely together. And using the blue card base gives a bit of a different look at the colour palette for the challenge, as I believe most of the rest of the team have used white card bases. I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our challenge, and you can find more inspiration from the team on the challenge blog or directly at their own blogs via the links below.
