School is still in session over at MFT. I seem to be falling further and further behind, but playing along today with day three which is ‘symmetry’. (You can see day one here and day two here.) I thought a gatefold design would be ideal for a symmetrical card, and decided to make a get well card. Like my submission for rainbow I used snippets for creating my card.
I started by creating my card base. First I cut a panel of 8 1/2″ by 5 1/2″, as if I were going to make a side fold A2 card. Then instead of scoring down the middle at 4 1/4″ I scored it at 2 1/8″ in on each edge. I folded the flaps and creased with my bone folded. I realised that there was a slight overlap, presumably human error with the measuring. I fixed this by closing the flaps with the longer one underneath and carefully using my craft knife with the edge of the top flap as a guide to trim away the extra piece.
Next I used the MFT Band Aid Dienamics to create five band aids (or plasters!) from a large snippet of cream card. I also used one of the hearts from the same set to cut a snippet of red, and adhered each heart to a band aid with Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue.
I wanted to adhere the band aids down the centre of my card to create the symmetrical design. Of course I could only adhere them on one side so that they wouldn’t be holding the card base closed. However I decided to add interest to the design by alternating which side each band aid was stuck down on. The first, third and last band aids got adhered on the right hand side, and the second and fourth on the left hand side. For each I used a combination of double-sided tape and Glossy Accents to make sure they would be strongly held down.
As a finishing touch I cut down a panel to go on the inside of my card, and stamped Get Well Soon from The Cat’s Pajamas’ Banner Days stamp set onto the panel with Altenew Ruby Red ink, which further ties in the red on the outside of the card. I adhered it to the inside of the card with double sided tape.
This card turned out pretty much exactly as I’d imagined, which made me really happy! It’s a fun design and I think quite sweet with the hearts. A gatefold seemed like a perfect choice for symmetrical, as it has that symmetrical opening, and keeping the band aids aligned down the opening line means that the design is symmetrical, at least whilst closed. As I said in my intro I am running behind on the Summer School but I hope to get my last couple of entries in soon!
Love,
Lady Joyful
