The Little Boo Crew’s Mini Hop-lloween | Month of Celebration

I have a treat for you today. I’m part of a fun Halloween themed hop! A Hop-lloween, if you will. (And we will!) If you’re already hopping through you should have joined me from Marie – welcome to my stop of the hop! If I’m your first stop , that’s not a problem. I’ll have the next stop listed later, so you can keep on hopping through.

If this is your first time visiting my blog I’m so happy you’ve found me. I’m having a celebration this month as I recently reached 2000 subscribers on my YouTube channel, plus it’s my birthday month. All month long I’m going to be creating videos, and the more you comment on the more chances you’ll have to win a prize! Check out the original video to hear all about it, then leave a comment on the video, and head over to the Rafflecopter to confirm your entry. Commenting on today’s video is just one way to get an extra entry towards the prize draw.

In previous videos I’ve mentioned that I’m trying to avoid buying more foam tape because it’s not the friendliest for the environment, and I’ve been trying to be more conscious of such things. A lot of interactive cards however need foam tape. Or do they? That’s the question I asked myself when I set to making this shaker card.

First off though I created my Halloween coloured background by doing some swinking. I took a snippet of white card and swiped across it with Tangerine, Green Apple, Flirty Fuchsia and Jet Black inks. I then used Versafine Onyx Black ink to stamp the jar from Trinity Stamps’ Candy Jar stamp set over my striped background.

Next I cut my striped jar out with the coordinating Candy Jar dies. The dies come nestled together and I chose not to cut apart the inner and outer portion of the dies at this stage. I may do so in future if I want to be able to use the jar whole. Leaving them together meant that I knew they would be perfectly aligned still when I used them again to cut my foam tape alternative – some chipboard! The piece I used was actually a little too thick for the dies to cut through, so I had to use my scissors and craft knife to complete the cutting. And in order to get enough depth for my shaker I actually cut out two layers of the chipboard. I used Glossy Accents to adhere the chipboard layers together, and also to adhere the striped layer to acetate and then onto the chipboard layers. Before I added the top layer though, I used a black marker to go around the edges of the chipboard layers to disguise it somewhat.

Next I worked on my card base. I used Altenew’s Wood Pallete Background with Catherine Pooler Twilight ink to stamp onto the bottom of my card to create the look of the table. I then used the Candy Jar as a guide to help me line up my sentiment which is from Lawn Fawn’s Monster Mash.

Having already adhered the acetate window to my layered outer portion of my jar made it a little tricky to get the inner portion glued into the right place on the card base. I first put the inner portion down without glue, placed the outer portion over it and shifted the whole thing until it was straight and positioned where I wanted it, and then lifted the outer part of the jar, taking care not to move the inner part in the process. I could then use a pencil to mark where I wanted the inner portion adhered.

I used googly eyes for my shaker filler, choosing a variety of sizes including three quite large ones and arranging them onto the inner portion of the jar to make sure it would be not quite but almost full. I then used Glossy Accents once again to adhere the jar into position.

The conclusion to my experiment then is that yes, you can make a shaker without using foam tape! Layers of regular cardstock would no doubt work just as well as the chipboard, though more layers would be required to achieve the necessary depth. And of course the amount of depth needed will depend on what the shaker filler is. The large eyes I used are actually slightly too big to be able to shake, so I could perhaps have added another layer of chipboard to my shaker. Then again, another layer might have given the small eyes too much space and allowed them to flip over when shaken, which I think would have annoyed me more than the big ones not moving!

Don’t forget to leave a comment over on YouTube, and complete the Rafflecopter for a chance to win my giveaway prize for the month. And to keep hopping with the Boo Crew head over to the super talented Lounon’s blog. I’m sure you will love what she made! And if you started the hop with Lounon, then I was your last stop. I hope you enjoyed the time you spent with us and got lots of Halloween inspiration.

Love,

  1. Charlotte, this is so freaking cute! I love the googly eyes with that sentiment!!! I agree about foam tape, but sometimes its just the easiest solution. I bet corkboard would cut easier than chipboard, and it should be natural and biodegradable… just an idea. Here in the US you can buy it in sheets to make cork pin message boards with. Maybe you can find some there in a thickness similar to foam tape. And I am totally with you that stuck eyes are better than ones that can flip backwards! Every single shaker card is a new challenge, isn’t it? So glad you were able to work in our Hop-lloween with your celebration month!!!

    1. Thank you 🙂 The corkboard sounds like a great idea! I’ll have to keep that in mind. The chipboard is leftover from packaging I received so it is something I already had on hand. But I’d definitely like to try the cork when I ‘need’ to buy something to replace the foam tape. Thank you for having me along for the hop!
