HLS CAS Challenge | Little Gnomie | Short and/or Tall

Hello! It’s a new month, a new year, and time for a new post for a new-to-me design team. I’m excited to be joining the Happy Little Stampers CAS Challenge team, and for this first project of my design team term our theme is short and/or tall.

For my card I decided to have a short gnome with a (comparatively) tall flower. First I die cut a panel of Neenah 80lb card stock with one of Kat Scrappiness’s Never Ending Rectangle dies. I placed the panel into my MISTI and got started with my stamping.

The stamps I chose are from The Cats Pajamas What’s Up Gnomie? set. I first stamped the gnome with MFT black hybrid ink, then masked it off and stamped the flower to give the appearance that the flower was behind the gnome. If I were to redo this, I would actually stamp the flower head first, mask that off, stamp the gnome, mask and then stamp the rest of the flower. That way the gnomes hat would have appeared to be behind the petals of the flower giving the impression that the gnome is under the flower rather than in front of it. I also stamped the sentiment at the same time.

Next I moved onto colouring with my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I started with the flower which I coloured a deep red with a cream centre. I added texture with stippling for the centre and flicks for the petal. I used greens for the flower’s stem.

For the gnome I went with blue-green shades for his outfit, red-browns for his belt and boots, and just a hint of ivory to add shading to his white beard. I went with pale tans for his skin, adding a bit of pink to his nose, and finished off with yellow on the belt buckle and grey for the soles of the boots.

For the grounding of my image I coloured the soil with some browns, keeping the patch relatively small and confined to the area beneath the gnome’s feet. I added texture with stopping once again.

Having completed my colouring I decided to add further interest with some white gel pen detailing. I first added shine marks to several areas of the image including the flower petals, stem and the gnome’s clothing. I then also added further stippling with the white gel pen to further add interest to the design.

Once I was finally happy with my image I used double sided tape to adhere a piece of scrap packaging to the back of the panel as a way to give some slight dimension. I’m avoiding using foam tape as much as possible as it is bad for the environment. I then adhered the panel onto a blue-green card base, and my design was complete.

I’m pleased with this design, which turned out almost exactly as I’d had in mind when the design came to me. I do wish I’d masked it differently (as mentioned above) so that the gnome would be under rather than in front of the flower, but that’s a small quibble. I enjoyed the process of creating the card, and it was nice to return to it after the rather long break I had taken for my health at the end of the year.

Love,
