Perfectly CAS Challenge | Splashy Day | Splash

It’s time for a new challenge at Perfectly CAS, and this month our theme is ‘splash’, which is entirely open to your interpretation. I chose a cute image for my card to invoke the splashy feel. Don’t forget that for this challenge your design should take up no more than 1/3 of your card space.

I started with a light tan card base which I placed into my MISTI. I then arranged the image, from Simon Says Stamp’s Flowers and Showers stamp set along with a sentiment from The Cat’s Pajamas Banner Days stamp set. I stamped both with MFT’s black hybrid ink, and left the stamps in place in my MISTI.

Next I worked on colouring the image. I used watercolour pencils, keeping the colours fairly simple. I went yellow for the chick itself, with orange beak and legs. For the boots and hat I chose green, and for the umbrella blue to tie in with the blue I used for the water. I went back to the oranges, along with a touch of brown, for the handle of the umbrella. I also used the oranges and yellows to add colour to the sentiment.

Once I was happy with the colouring I took my Nuvo Aqua Shimmer brush pen and user it as a water brush to blend the colour out. Using the glitter brush pen rather than actual water not only adds shimmer to the design but also allowed me to blend it out without getting the card base too wet, which is important as it was made with regular card rather than watercolour card.

I returned the card base to my MISTI and restamped both the image and sentiment to make the lines crisper. I used Versafine Onyx Black ink this time, which gives very rich black lines. And that completed my card.

This card was thrown together a bit last minute, if I’m honest. Between health and tech issues I’ve been dealing with lately I almost forgot about making it! And when I did sit down to do it the ideas did not want to flow. (And then my camera died when I tried to take photos, and the spare battery turned out to be dead too…) Despite the difficulties I’m pleased with how the card came together, and I think it meets the prompt nicely. I hope it inspires you to come and join in with our challenge. You can find further inspiration from the rest of the team on the challenge page, or directly at their own blogs via the links below.

  1. This is such a darling card! Glad you were able to get atleast 1 photo of it! Love the idea of coloring with glitter brush pen instead of water – the images must be so sparkly! Thank you for joining us at the HLS Watercolor challenge!

  2. Super cute card! Thank you for the tip about using a Nuvo Aqua Shimmer brush pen to “move” the watercolor pencil marks. I’m sorry that you had many challenges. I’m glad that something so great resulted though. Thanks for joining us at Happy Little Stampers ~ Watercolour Challenge.
