If you need inspiration for masculine projects, The Male Room is always a great start. This month our theme is ‘wood’. How you interpret that is entirely up to you, as long as your project is suitable for a man or boy. I went with a lot of wooden elements for the birthday card that I created for this challenge.
I began with a snippet of cream card which I trimmed into a 9cm square, then cut in half length- and width-ways to create four squares of 4.5cm. I placed them into a woodgrain embossing folder (the one I used is a retired Taylored Expressions one) which I inked up with Tea Dye distress ink before running through my embossing machine. Inking it up first allowed me to get the debossed part of the squares to be the Tea Dye brown, whilst the embossed grain of the wood remained the cream colour. I then adhered the four squares onto a large snippet of gold satin sheen card with a slight gap in between each, and attached it to a brown card base.
For my sentiment I pulled out some wooden alphabet pieces from an old Love From Lizi card kit, and picked out the letters I would need for spelling Happy Birthday. I spent a little time arranging them to work out the correct spacing, then removed the backing paper and adhered them into place. I positioned them centrally but slightly raised towards the top of my embossed square, which allowed me to somewhat disguise the wonkiness of the spacing through the centre.
As a final touch of embellishment, plus further disguising of wonkiness (there was a lot!) I used some wooden dots that had been part of another Love From Lizi card kit.

I definitely feel like I got a good use of ‘wood’ in my card! I don’t love the result, especially after struggling so much with lining up the squares, but I’m happy enough with it and I think it does make for a nice design. I particularly like how the embossing turned out. I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our challenge. You can find further inspiration from the rest of the Design Team on the challenge site or directly at their blogs via the links below.
