CIC 522 | Amazing Flamingo | Oh Birdie

We have a fun new challenge starting at Cupcake Inspirations today. Our theme is “Oh Birdie”, and the kind of bird you decide to include on your project is entirely up to you! I went with a flamingo for my take on the theme, and used products from Skull and Cross Buns. I am on the Skull and Cross Buns Design Team, which means this card is a DT project for both Cupcake Inspirations and Skull and Cross Buns!

I started my card by stamping the flamingo from Tropical Party onto a hot pink card base with MFT Black Hybrid ink. I left the stamp in my MISTI so that I would be able to easily restamp it later, and started on my colouring. I used coloured pencils to colour the image, starting with a light layer of white across the whole image to tone down the intensity of the pink. I then worked in layers of pinks and an orange along with the white as needed, until I had created the look I was after.

With the colouring complete I restamped the flamingo in Versafine Onyx Black ink. I then added a mask, made by stamping and fussy cutting the flamingo on some scrap paper, then coating the back with a small amount of Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue and allowing it to dry to its repositionable state before sticking in place.

Returning the card base to my MISTI I took the ‘you’re amazing’ stamp from Quirky Sentiments and positioned it over the flamingo’s bottom food. I stamped with white pigment ink, shifted the card down and stamped again. I repeated shifting and stamping, being sure to keep the shift even, until I had stamped the sentiment as many times as I wanted. I decided I wanted one more at the bottom, so I returned the card to the starting position and shifted up by the same interval to add the final sentiment into place.

Having finished all the stamping I carefully removed the mask from the flamingo with the help of my reverse tweezers. There were a few areas that the white pigment ink had gone over the lines of the flamingo due to the margin of error with the mask. I fixed this by taking a sharp black pencil and carefully colouring over the lines to restore them to how they should appear. I then finished off the flamingo by adding a little shine with some white gel pen.

The final touch to complete my card was a trio of Nuvo Drops in Simply White.

I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our challenge. You can find further inspiration from the rest of the Design Team on the challenge site or directly at their blogs via the links below.
