One Stamp Two Ways | Video

The title says there’s a video, and there is, but it only shows the process for one card. I didn’t think I’d do a video today because I’m still recovering from a respiratory infection and I didn’t think trying to do a voice-over would be wise. Too much coughing and sniffling, for that. But my husband pointed out I could do a video without a voice-over. I’d already made one of the cards at that point, but I figured I’d do a video for the other so that I at least had something to put up on YouTube.

Card 1 – Just Because

The first card is actually the second one I made, and is the one shown in the process video. I thought I’d have it as the first card here though as it is the ‘traditional’ usage of the stamp. As I was editing the video there were a lot of points that I felt like I should have stopped, but I did keep going, and eventually had to fix some mistakes, but I think I worked through the ugly in the end.

I used the Atta Girl stamp set from Love From Lizi, initially stamping it with Altenew Dusk ink. For the colouring I carefully (not carefully enough!) used scrap paper to mask around the peacock and ink blended the Dusk ink with a sponge dauber, then also bringing in Hero Arts’ Green Apple and Forever Green inks.

When I was done ink blending I restamped the image with the help of my MISTI in Versafine Onyx Black ink. I then heat embossed with WOW Gold Pearl Embossing Powder.

There were some smudges around the image where I hadn’t been careful enough with my masking, and I used my Tombow Sand Eraser to try to clear them up. It worked well enough but I decided there were too many smudges and thought I’d try adding a soft ink blended background, using the same colours I’d used on the peacock. It didn’t work out as I’d like, so continuing to work through to try and get to a point I liked I bought in Altenew’s Skylight stencil and blended over again with the same inks for a tone on tone look, which helped at least somewhat.

The final touches of the card were adding the sentiment from the same stamp set, adding a border of Matt Gold Pinstripe Peel-Offs, which helped to further pull in the gold of the peacock (I keep wanting to write phoenix…), and finally adding a visual triangle of enamel dots.

Card 2 – Love At Christmas

I wanted to do something a bit non-traditional for my other card, and decided to use the tail of the peacock stamp to create a wreath. I used my MISTI and original Gina K. wreath builder template. As the tail of the peacock is so big I only needed to stamp it on alternate turns of the template, rather than all eight. I used a combination of Tumbled Glass, Cracked Pistachio, and Lucky Clover Distress Oxides to try to add a variying colour to the feathers, though it kind of ended up a bit more blended that I had intended.

Next I worked on my sentiment panel. I knew I wanted a kraft card base so I used kraft for the sentiment panel too. I cut a circle from Love From Lizi’s Background Builder – Set One Dies and stamped a sentiment from the Merry Little Christmas stamp set. Initially I stamped with the same three inks, creating an ombre, but the Tumbled Glass didn’t show up well enough so I switched to Mermaid Lagoon for that instead. I then heat embossed over it with Glassy Ocean embossing powder, which is translucent so allowed some of the colour from the ink to show through.

As the panel I’d used for my wreath was square I needed to cut another panel to extend it to fit my card base. I used Teal Mirror Pinstripe Peel-Offs to hide the join between the two panels, then adhered them to my kraft card base. I then popped up the sentiment circle by adhering a slightly smaller chipboard circle behind it for a little dimension. The final touch as a trio of Nuvo Drops in Blue Babe around the sentiment, as well as more scattered around the wreath. The ones in the wreath are quite small and blended in with the colours of the feathers, but I think they still add some extra interest to the design.

Which do you prefer? I think I like the Christmas card best, but that might be just because I got so frustrated making the other one!
