Sketch-Inspired Cards

I have four cards to share with you today. I was playing with a variety of different sketches, a different one for each card, and I decided that would be the theme of the blog post. There’s quite a variety between them – floral, cute, CAS… Making four cards today also gets me off to a good start for creating this month. In July I made and shared 97 cards. I’d like to try and beat that this month. Might be challenging because I’ll be back to work (now that my cough is finally sort of under control) and won’t have as much time to spare. But anyway, on with the cards.

Card 1 – Magical Friend

The sketch I used for my first card has a fun criss-cross background. As I was trying to work out how to best approach that on my card I remembered that I have Simon Says Stamp’s (retired) Wonky Cross Hatch die which would be perfect. I cut it from some grey card and set it aside whilst I worked on the rest of the card.

Dragon – green: DG4. DG3, LG4, LG2, LG1

Dragon – orange-yellow ombre: GB7, BO1, GT2, CT4, CT1

Grey Mug – IG10, IG8, IG6, IG2

I stamped a dragon from MFT’s Magical Friends with MFT Black Hybrid ink onto some X-Press It Blending Card and coloured using Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. You can see the colours I used to the left. I went with green for the main body area, then used an orange to yellow ombre for the rest of the body, and grey for the little coffee mug. Once the colouring was completed I fussy cut the dragon out, used a black brush tip pen to go around the edge and hide the core, and set it aside.

I chose a yellow card base for this design, and picked out a sentiment from the Magical Friends stamp set, which I stamped with Twilight ink. I then popped up my grey cross hatch on some small strips of chipboard for dimension, added the dragon on top, and adhered to the card base, completing the card.

Card 2 – Sending Paradise

My second card is a floral design, based on a sketch that is made up of three panels. I cut my panels first, doing some mental maths to work out the sizing needed (which I didn’t write down, sorry!)

I used Uniko’s Paradise stamp set to decorate each of my panels. For the largest panel I used the solid stamps, and used Memento inks in Dandelion and Tangelo for the main portion of the flowers, Pear Tart for the leaves, and Catherine Pooler’s Party Dress ink for the centres of the flowers. I then used the outline versions of the stamps with the same inks to stamp a pattern on the next largest panel. For the smallest panel I added my sentiment, using the Party Dress for the word “Paradise” and Versafine Onyx Black ink for the rest of the sentiment.

I decided to mat each of my panels onto black for extra interest, then adhered them all down to the card base, trying to keep the spacing even. It’s not quite, but it will do! I finished off by adding a trio of Love From Lizi’s enamel dots to fill out the sentiment panel a little, and also hide a smudge of ink!

Card 3 – Birthday Rocket

The sketch for card three has a single small panel to the bottom right of the card base. I found a snippet of black card that I thought would work for the panel, and after working out where I would position it on my black card base I took my Gansai Tambi watercolour set and found a gold and pearlised white, which I used to add splatter onto my card base, then set it aside to dry.

I added interest to my focal panel with the addition of a snippet layer of some starry paper. This is actually leftover wrapping paper. I adhered it with a full layer of double sided tape, and trimmed off the excess. I then set that panel aside too.

I stamped the rocket from MFT’s Best Friends In The Universe with their Black Hybrid ink onto some X-Press It Blending Card, and again coloured with Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers. I kept the colouring really very simple, then fussy cut the image out and, as with the dragon on card one, edged with black to hide the white core of the card.

The sentiment for my card is from the same stamp set, heat embossed in white on black card stock, which I then trimmed down with the MISTI Cut Align.

Rocket – white: IG2

Rocket – blue: BT7, BT9

Window – IG10

Fire – CR11, OR3, CT4

With all the elements ready I just had to adhere everything together. I used more snippets of black card to add extra dimension to the pieces, popping the panel up off the card base, and the sentiment and rocket up off the panel.

Card 4 – Thanks for Bee-ing There

My final card for the day is a slimline, or actually I made it a mini slimline which is 3″ by 6″. The sketch has a circle focal point with a floral/leafy element poking out the top. I knew I wanted to go with a bee design on this card, so instead of leaves I stamped some honeycomb-style hexagons from Simon Says Stamp’s Bee Yourself stamp set with Squeezed Lemonade Distress Oxide directly onto my card base. I then stamped one of the dashed flying trails three times with Versafine Onyx Black ink.

For my focal point instead of a circle I die cut a hexagon and ink blended on it through Skull and Cross Buns Honeycomb Hexagons stencil first with the Squeezed Lemonade, then darkening up a few areas a little with Wild Honey. I removed the stencil and stamped a sentiment from the same stamp set with Versafine Onyx Black ink. I also added a bee from the stamp set, which I had previously stamped, coloured and cut out. With all the elements ready I just had to attach the hexagon to the card base, which I did with liquid glue and a couple of snippets of white card behind for extra dimension.

That’s all my cards! I tried to keep the descriptions brief but not lose any details. I’m attempting to be quick as it is late and I should be getting to bed soon! I’d love to know which of the four cards you like most. I think my favourite might be the bee card, but I’m not certain!

Love,
