HLS CAS Challenge | Floral Hello | Off The Edge

It’s time for a new HLS CAS Challenge. Our theme for August is “Off the Edge”. As always you’re welcome to interpret the theme however suits you, though it should be clear that you’ve followed it. And of course remember that we’re a clean and simple challenge, so we like to see lots of empty, unpatterned space left on your design.

I started by positioning the largest arrangement of flowers from Simon Says Stamp’s Sketched Flowers onto my white card base, overhanging the edge. I then stamped it with MFT Black Hybrid ink.

I used my Spectrum Noir Illustrator markers for the colouring, starting with the largest flower, which I decided would be pink. I used a flicking technique and left areas of white. I also went back over the colours twice to achieve the look I was after.

The round flowers in the left and back I also decided to colour pink, going for a slightly paler look. I didn’t use flicks for these as I didn’t feel it suited their shape, but I did again leave white in the highlight areas.

I chose yellow for my other two flowers, with the same rounded shading on the full flower which I gave deep shadows. For the partial flower piking in from the bottom I used the flicking motions and lighter shades of yellow.

I used two different green blends for the leaves, darker on the left ones and lighter yellow-green on the right. I also incorporated greens into the bud sprig in the centre of the arrangement.

Large Pink Flower – DR3, MG3, PP5, PP2

Smaller Pink Flowers – PP5, MG1, PP2, AP1

Round Yellow Flower – GB7, GB4, CT4, CT1

Pale Yellow Petals – CT4, CT1

Dark Leaves – BT7, YG3, DG4, LG4, LG1

Light Leaves and Buds – GG5, LG4, LG3, LG1

Having completed the alcohol marker section of my colouring I pulled out some coloured pencils to use to add more details to the designs. I mostly used them to add extra depth to the shadow areas of each part of the image. I then also used a grey to add a drop shadow to the image. The shadow wasn’t quite as intense as I wanted, so I repeated the process with a black, then again with the grey to soften the edges slightly.

The final touch for my card was a sentiment. I picked out the hello from the stamp set, which I felt fit really nicely in the space beside my flowers, and stamped with Versafine Onyx Black ink.

I hope this inspires you to come and join in with our challenge. You can find further inspiration from the rest of the Design Team on the challenge site or directly at their blogs via the links below.
